>In 2014, Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi broke out into the mainstream with the vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows. A sequel was announced soon afterward, but it has lingered in development hell for a decade now. While fans had the movie’s TV spin-off to tide them over, it looks like the long-awaited werewolf sequel We’re Wolves may finally be gaining some momentum. Collider’s Steve Weintraub got the news from Clement himself, who is at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival to promote his new film Kiri and Lou Go Raaa!, which is the first stop-motion movie from New Zealand.
>What We Do in the Shadows follows a group of vampires living their undead lives in suburban Wellington, New Zealand; they also encounter a rival group of werewolves led by Anton (Rhys Darby), who attempt (and fail) to eschew profanity and violence. The sequel, We’re Wolves, was to center around that group. The follow-up film was first announced a decade ago, and has since moved at a glacial pace: in 2019, Waititi described it as “the film that Jemaine and I keep pretending that we’re making.” However, Clement says that he and Waititi have begun writing the script. “We’re writing it, actually. We started writing. For a long time, we were just talking about it. Now, we’ve started it. Very recently.”
>He specifies that they began working on it this year, when his and Waititi’s busy schedules allowed it. “When we get together, we do some work on it,” he told Collider. Clement also confirms that, despite the success of the What We Do in the Shadows TV series, which wrapped up its sixth and final season on FX in 2024, We’re Wolves will be a movie.

think this might be a decade too late

I loved the film, but this feels like a long time later to be doing it, particularly when we’ve already had the TV series. I don’t think Taika Watiti still has the same draw he did a decade ago either.
And, potentially controversial take, I thought the TV show was excellent and exceeded the heights of the original film in almost every way, and I really didn’t expect it to. The central cast was just too good, and widely beloved.

If they do a crossover with the show this is probably a small streaming smash hit.

The TV show basically already gave us six seasons of perfect werewolf content, so a movie about the werewolves feels redundant unless they’re doing something actually different with it.

I lived across the street from the set for the show . They would put it up almost overnight in a studio parking lot I miss that tradition

I’m shocked at the lack of hype on here, I’m genuinely excited

If Jackie Daytona, human bartender isn’t in it then what’s the point?
To be honest, I thought the movie was “eh”, but loved the series.
