‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Won’t Lose Money. It May Not Rescue ‘Star Wars’ Either – Disney insiders break down how the feature will end up in the black. But if it can’t also broaden out the audience, do the optics further hurt a franchise whose core fandom has become increasingly discontent?

Here’s something really interesting right in this article:

      >Another message from inside Disney: the next Star Wars film — 2027’s Star Wars: Starfighter — is far more of a real test, since Mando is a Disney+ series that leapt from the small screen to the big screen.

Starfighter will be a true test for the brand. This one is clearly not going to tip the scales

New concept for a Star Wars project, Ryan Gosling as the lead, summer kick off movie like Mando was.

I think they should wait for the box office results before making such claims…

    4. Starwars has so many galaxies and planets and yet they decided to do a movie on a Disney Plus show.

      Good luck….

Those close to Disney’s decision-making confirm the Jon Favreau film needs to make $500 to $600 million globally to land in the black.

It doesn’t surprise me that this was an appetizer of sorts when the real test is coming. I was thinking the other night about the fanbase, how Disney really just put gasoline in the fire that was the vocal fandom. I grew up with the prequel hate and seeing it now redirected I was thinking if Star Wars would’ve been better off for another buyer. Unfortunately I say no as Kennedy would’ve been involved no matter what much to the fans detriment, and who knows what other studios would’ve demanded from sticking to releases or what have you. It was almost as though Star Wars should’ve just stayed dormant forever as nothing would’ve helped

    7. And to think Disney once planned 1 Starwars movie a year. They can’t even do 1 Starwars movie in 7 years.

It really doesn’t bode well for the future that Star Wars doesn’t really excite audiences anymore though.

This article is all over the place. The headline claims it won’t lose money yet it cost $260 million with marketing and needs $500 million to break even. Um, that kind of sounds like not making money to me?

    10. >The Memorial Day tentpole is showing particular strength among moviegoers under 13 (…)

Disney should think of long-term gain with Mandalorian like Lucas did with Clone Wars.

They said it needs to earn $500 million to turn a profit, and I still doubt it can do that.

You know things are going good when everybody, from Reddit fans to industry insiders are saying “No, this wasn’t Star Wars’ l real return to cinemas, that’s the next movie.”

Starfighter will be the true test. Directed by audience favorite Shawn Levy with Ryan Gosling, who just had a huge hit with a non franchise space film. I think with good marketing people will get exciting, but if it does badly, they gotta make Episode X to get people excited again or it might be too late.

Pretty much every film breaks even one day. Even a disaster like Gods of Egypt was reported to finally have made a profit some months ago. With enough time TV, home video, streaming, etc it happens eventually.

What studios hope for and aim for tho is profit as soon as possible, and I don’t think Mando is going to be one of those quick ones like they were aiming for

    15. Tbh I think by trying to appeal to as many people as possible they alienated their core audience and didn’t get the traction they wanted from other groups

    16. Huh???

They want the 4th season of a series turned into a glorified movie to broaden the audience?

This has gotta be an AI reasoning right?
