There’s a lot of movies releasing this summer, some are bound to either overperfom, underperform, meet expectations or just outright flop.
Usually every year there’s a movie that sparks the most discussion or debate. Last year it was by far Superman, which makes sense as it was the beginning of new cinematic universe which isn’t exactly a beloved concept in the movie/box office community.
Usually the most controversial or talked about movies are those within a cinematic universe and/or popular IP. So far this year I think Michael was a really controversial one because many people were 50/50 on its success.
Now it’s probably gonna be Mando (cinematic universe, popular IP) but what do you think will be the overall most controversial/debated movie this summer.
My guess is Supergirl. I personally don’t think it will do well, and it’s the second film of a cinematic universe, and it’s a superhero film so. I think this movie will spark the most debate. There’s going to be a lot of “superhero fatigue” or “DCU is Dead” talks, like many people say after every MCU/DC/Disney underperformance. Many comic book fans will debate those people, and it will overall be very toxic. (I think Moana/Odyssey will be the second and third)
I do want to say I hope that every movie does well, I’m not rooting for Supergirl to fail. And though I don’t believe Supergirl will be a success, I don’t think it will be the end of comic book movies or DC. I don’t think superhero movies will ever ever go away, at least not any time soon.
What movie do you think will be the most controversial/debated this summer? Just the summer, obviously Doomsday will be the number one of the year.

Supergirl, just because they’re already running defense for it and pre-blaming “toxic masculinity”, etc.
But, like the Marvels, the audience will still be majority male when all is said and done.
It’s The Odyssey, and it’s not even close. Every thing that has come out has only produced more culture war back-and-forth. I still think it will make money in the end because Nolan is too big to fail, but I can see the negativity having an effect on the box office total, and a dent on his reputation and goodwill from audiences moving forward.
There’s not a huge controversy around Supergirl, it’s more like apathy.
Odyssey if you have been watching the youtube news
If I had to do a ranking:
1. MOANA
“WOKE TRASH“; People hate Disney live-action remakes with all their heart. The trailers received many dislikes; people are trashing on the CGI; I‘ve seen disgusting comments towards the lead actress; a soulless cash grab, as many would say; #BoycottDisney; girl boss trash; etc.
2) TOY STORY 5
“Toy Story should have ended with Toy Story 3“; “We are tired of Disney/Pixar sequels“; “We don‘t need Toy Story 5!!!; “We don’t need Pixar to tell us how to raise our kids.“; “Don‘t tell me the iPad is going to be friends with the toys by the end of the film?🤦♂️So predictable and boring.“ etc.
3) ODYSSEY
The casting is insanely controversial. I‘ve also seen complaints about it being historically inaccurate. People are saying Christopher Nolan doesn‘t know what he‘s doing; they are hoping this film fails.
4) SUPERGIRL
DCU haters want the DCU to fail. They are making fun of the lead actress and her appearance; “Female empowerment + girl boss trash🤮“; “CGI looks trash.“
Supergirl is going to be a small performer, so perhaps, the hate won’t receive much attention.
It is pretty difficult to rank them…, I think Odyssey being connected to a successful director makes it a big target…, same thing with Disney.
People don‘t like it if someone becomes too successful.
Avengers Doomsday could genuinely cause the biggest hatred of any film this year.
This sub has a weird obsession with certain movies, every day there are posts and comments saying Supergirl is going to be a massive flop, etc.
Supergirl would be controversial because it’s a girl if people still cared about comic book movies, but they don’t anymore so I feel like it’s going to just come and go.
The odyssey
Toy Story 5……… if it makes me sad again.
already hearing lots of echo chamber yap about the odyssey so that one
Odyssey,Mando and Supergirl.Outside chance for TS5.
Moana 2026 due to all the bad CGI
Supergirl probably won’t be a financial success but I think it’ll be good and get good reviews bar some right wing people moaning about it
Definitely The Odyssey. I recognized this when the more right-leaning people in my office were upset over black Helen of Troy and rumored transgender Achilles, but then the left-leaning people were upset over innaccuracies and the modern dialogue used in the trailer. It seems to be rubbing a lot of groups the wrong way for different reasons.
I’m surprised more people aren’t saying Scary Movie, just because of the more conservative leaning humor I think that one will be very controversial online.
Star Wars will tank
It’s The Odyssey and it’s not even close because the world’s richest manbaby weighed in on it so now it’s gonna be a whole ass thing.
I don’t really understand the odyssey controversy. Isn’t it a fantasy movie?
The Odyssey and it’s not even close. It won’t hurt its box office though
We already have an answer and it’s The Odyssey. I don’t see any other movie surpassing it.
To be fair it’s a dumb controversy, but it’s a controversy all the same.
I think Supergirl will do poorly (not outrageously terribly or anything but it’ll lose money) and we’ll see a lot of discussion about the future of the DCU with some hyperbolic takes.
The Odyssey will do well but we’ll have endless right wing crying about it
I think everything else you have in that image will just do the numbers most are probably expecting (Toy Story will do very well, Scary Movie 6 will bomb, Spiderman will do very well and Mando and Grogu will probably lose a bit of money) and there won’t be much controversy.
There’s already a bunch of people whining that Toy Story should have ended at part 3, and they are probably going to get louder once 5 is actually out.
Saying that, the part 4 haters will probably have little effect on the box office, and 5 will most likely make big money.
More super hero trash..(rolls eyes)..
Odyssey, chuds will not support it and people will complain easily and hate it
It’s The Odyssey. People have been complaining about the casting, costume designs and dialogues. Only Matt Damon and Robert Pattinson have been safe from any sort of criticisms.
Moana has no major controversies. Apart from online crap talk about curly hair and wigs. All-polynesian cast is authentic as.
Scary movie for pure controversy i mean every line will be crossed
