Note that early in production, the budget was reportedly around $200–250 million, with Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer trying to keep costs lower after how expensive Dead Man’s Chest ($250M) and At World’s End ($300M) became, which were famously shot back to back. But production costs kept rising, and reports from Forbes and UK financial filings later revealed the gross budget ballooned to around $410.6 million. After tax credits, the net cost came down to about $378–379 million, which is why the film is often considered one of the most expensive movies ever made.

      Those Forbes’ numbers should ALWAYS be taken with a grain of salt. Not only they often include spendings that are not directly related to productions themselves, but what happens is that some of those numbers include spendings that have occurred AFTER the film was released.

      The inclusion of mermaids was a very good idea, and Ian McShane as Blackbeard is such an awesome antagonist.

    3. As a stand alone adventure I find this a fun film. Much better than Dead Men Tell No Tales which destroyed and desecrated the lore.

      Imo its a pretty underrated movie. I rarely see people mention this positively, but I like it a lot.

      This movie was actually pretty fun. Critics just got tired of Depp’s schtick by that point, but it honestly wasn’t a bad way to continue the franchise with a stand alone adventure. It’s kind of funny how 15 years ago, a 4 years later forthquel was seen as pushing it, while the MCU got heaps of passable reviews for similar fare.

      This movie really goes to show that Verbinski had something special with his trilogy. While it’s not a terrible film, it’s ridden with flaws that make it apparent they didn’t understand Verbinski’s style or they wanted to replicate his earlier successes.

    7. I like this one a lot. Great set pieces and the performances are top tier as usual.

    8. For some reason I thought this movie was big domestically but it only made $241 million compared to $800 million it made internationally.

      Not an awful movie, but a totally unnecessary one. Pirates 3 ended the franchise on a high note, and I personally think that should’ve been the end of the series. This one just felt like a glorified DLC to the original trilogy.

      Pirates 5 , however, was a disaster. It completely destroyed the continuity and lore of the previous films. That one just sucks.

      > On Stranger Tides grossed $805 million internationally.

      At the time, *On Stranger Tides* was the 4th highest grossing film internationally, only behind *Avatar*, *Titanic*, and *Deathly Hallows Part 2*.

      Its overseas gross is just bonkers for 2011. The top 10 international markets were:

      * Japan – $108.8M
      * China – $70M
      * Russia/CIS – $63.6M
      * Germany – $62.4M
      * U.K. – $54.1M
      * France – $49.2M
      * Brazil – $31.1M
      * Mexico – $28.9M
      * Spain – $27.1M
