Turns out fewer people took their moms to see Mortal Kombat II on Mother’s Day than WB expected. Who knew? Final opening weekend box office was below estimates: $38.5M instead of $40M. Sunday dropped 37% vs Saturday.

Damn. I actually expected a drop, but not by THIS much. And that Sunday drop in particular is just nasty.

That’s REALLY close to Michael’s THIRD weekend btw.

100M+ domestic definitely not going to happen now, but maybe 70M+ with the boost through the Memorial Day weekend.

It’ll pass 100M+ globally, but I don’t see it going much higher than that; maybe a 110M-135M global final. We’ll know more after its 2nd weekend.

Did people expect this outcome, or is this a shocking development?

1.5 million lower than estimates. 100 million is dead. Hitting 84.6 million would give it bragging rights of doubling its predecessor’s 42.3 million cume but that was a day-date streaming drop in the middle of the pandemic.

Very bad news for the movie. It’s going to get torched when mandalorian and grogu hit theatres.

Wonder how well this film will leg out, since I don’t see it hitting a $100 million domestic total. The first one didn’t have good legs either, though part of the issue was that it was a day-and-date theatrical/HBO Max release.

Next weekend’s drop is not gonna be pretty even though nothing big is coming out,

Street Fighter needs to show there is a market for fighting games at the theaters

*Wuthering Heights* got to **$84M** DOM off a *$37.5M* 4 day holiday opening weekend.

This could surely get to over **100M+** DOM lifetime total with Memorial Day and not too much competition until th first weekend of June.

Cause they wanted to see Knives Out with sheep instead. Literally the perfect Mother’s Day movie

I was excited for this until they bumped the release date and then I forgot about this movie until this post.

Hopefully people buying this on digital will save it and a third will get green lit. It’ll do good numbers on PVOD

Huge mistake holding this movie until Mother’s Day weekend. MK2 was set up for success having an October/Halloween release, yet here we are pretending to be shocked.

    12. entertainmentlord on

I highly doubt they expected Mothers day to be a big boost for it.

I have to wonder what the landscape could’ve been had this released in October like originally planned. Tron Ares bombed out hard and this definitely would’ve stolen its thunder. As of now it’s way too crowded of a summer for MK to have done anything substantial. Not to mention is likely to have reduced Imax this weekend in favor of more Michael showings.

I saw different projections I guess. I haven’t seen $40M projections since Friday.

Would be nice if Street Fighter outperforms this. That looks like an actual good movie compared to the drivel New Line came out with here

    16. GimmeThatWheat424 on

This underperformance was obvious btw, this sub was only going so hard for it because it’s a WB movie.

    17. VVantaBuddy on

drop $1.5M?! damn, that’s harsh! and i bet legs will be even more tragic.

    18. UsefulWeb7543 on

Stupid that WB should never delay it and would done better. I think the WW total might be $170M-$180M. I think it will double the budget and barely broke even. Then the movie should be fine

Do moms care about watching movies based on video games? I don’t think so.
