1st wknd: 13.5M vs 10.0M
2nd wknd: 48.5M vs 22.8M
The Super Mario Bros. Movie finished with ~102M in Japan. Expect a 40M-55M final for Super Mario Galaxy, for now.
Japan has two more days of golden week so we shall see.

damn even japan isn’t feeling as hot about it compared to the first one. this thing is gonna crawl screaming to a billion, if not halt right before it
I think quality is making a difference in Japan.
Mario may be a Japanese property, but Japanese audiences have been trained to expect a certain degree of quality from animation. The really poor storytelling in this Mario movie is probably hurting it there.
Hopefully the notable drop off from the first movie to the second will lead some of the folks at Nintendo to reevaluate their strategy. Brand recognition and hype can only get them so far, if they want to sustain their cinematic universe, they need to invest in halfway decent storytelling too.
