Dern is joining the series in place of Helena Bonham Carter, who recently exited the series shortly after filming began. Dern is not taking over the exact role Bonham Carter was to play, however. Instead, she is playing a new character developed by series mastermind Mike White.

Oh my god I need this to somehow become the Enlightened Cinematic Universe. She and Mike White are a great team, I wonder if she came in in a pinch but I love this for us.
