While developing Fast Five, Universal Pictures deliberately departed from the street racing theme prevalent in previous films in the series, to transform the franchise into a heist action series involving cars.
By doing so, they hoped to attract wider audiences that might otherwise be put off by a heavy emphasis on cars and car culture. Fast Five is considered the transitional film in the series, featuring only one car race and giving more attention to action set pieces such as brawls, gunfights, and the central heist.
The production mounted a comprehensive marketing campaign, with the film being advertised through social media, virtual games, cinema chains, automobile manufacturers, and at NASCAR races.

This is where the franchise finally clicked with critics and audiences. A 78% score after the first four pulled 55%, 37%, 38%, and 29% respectively is a massive jump.
This film changed everything for the franchise, shifting it from the street racing focus of the first four films to a more over the top, action driven style. That shift really worked here, and for better or worse, it defined what the series would become.
I still consider *Fast Five* the best entry in the *Fast & Furious* saga. It is a lot of fun and strikes a great balance between goofiness and heart. I’m also impressed by how much they achieved with a $125 million budget, especially in the third act.
This in my opinion is by far the best fast and furious movie and also one of the best action movies of the 2010s.
Love this one
This movie changed The Rock’s career.
5, 6 & 7 are the best in the franchise
Best of the bunch.
This film managed to keep the stupid to a reasonable level and was a great heist flick that still had room for all the various characters to shine.
It’s too bad they learned the wrong lessons from F5 and assumed that the series from them forward had to go full The Rock.
They never found this magic again even 7 got emotional.
The franchise would go on to constantly receive Fresh or Certified Fresh ratings on RottenTomatoes right up to **Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw**.
