Quite interesting and I definitely didn’t expect it, I think it might be because people saw the cartoonish reviews of the critics and not only decided to ignore them but actively bought the tickets to check the movie themselves

Something that honestly doesn’t help their already dubious reputation, since after reading some of them there are valid criticisms but many were also clearly biased or even straight up unprofessional

This movie is going to be review proof… The average movie goer just wants to see Micheal Jackson songs performed on a big screen and I imagine word of mouth will be pretty positive.

  3. Sure, now people are going to watch this movie as a reaction to the abysmal reviews. What’s next? […] walk ups? $75-80 million isn’t even that great considered some predictions here. Let’s see where it goes, I think the legs will be disappointing to bad.

Imagine if this gets close to a billion even with a 30% RT score. Historic, but nobody would be surprised. If there’s a movie that could actually be review proof, it’s this one.

  5. None of the interstitial scenes matter if they nail Beat It, Thriller, and the Apollo anniversary.

It’s helpful to think of this movie as karaoke slop. Once you realize this is what normies love to ingest, you’ll realize there’s no way it fails.

People are (at least in my area) are more regularly buying tickets closer to or on release date. Critic reviews are a reminder for some that a movie is about to come out.

That’s something that’s not being accounted for here.

I mean if Jurassic world dominion can make a billion off nostalgia, so can Michael…

Movies like this (Sinners, Bad Boys, One of Them Days) typically increases massively at the last minute so I doubt the reviews would push the needle on this one, and the sky’s the limit once walkups is accounted for.

I think this could be the most frontloaded mega OW of the year, but I’m hoping it goes full zeitgeist and repeat viewings help stabilize it from weekend three and onwards especially if its a crowdpleaser with audiences.

There’s no reason to believe the reviews were responsible for an increase in ticket sales. That’s a ridiculous piece of speculation.

  12. I think critics’ ratings have a certain influence on whether a film performs well or poorly at the Oscars, but when considering box office revenue, audience ratings are more important. I’m not sure what score Michael will get in the audience category, but if it’s good enough, it doesn’t need to worry too much about critics’ scores, at least not at the box office.
