SCREAM 4 turns 15. The 4th installment in the series underperformed massively making only 38.2M domestically and 97.2M worldwide on a 40M budget, making it the lowest grossing Scream film to date. A 5th installment was eventually released in 2022.

Massive hottake, but Scream 4 just wasn’t all that good and was way too try hard and on the nose with it’s meta commentary and that’s why it turned people off and didn’t work when it came out. It wasn’t remotely scary which is still a big draw for Scream films (people think of them as meta films, but peak Scream in the 90’s people actually went to them to see a horror film that would scare them). And it’s not because it was “ahead of it’s time”. Everyone got the messaging. Social media and internet personalities existing in 2011. It was just a bit too cheesy and focused too much on the wrong thing. The good ending saved it. But everything leading up to that ending is kind of a dud.

That $40m budget is mind boggling even if it’s because of cast salaries. Atleast 3 (which costs the same) was shot on location in LA, whereas they shot 4 in Michigan

The timing on this was just bad. Scream 4 didn’t really fit with what horror audiences were going for back then.

Scream 4 was the first Scream I ever saw in theaters. It’s one of my favorites.

One of the most disappointing sequels of the scream franchise along with Scream 7 which is one the worst films of the franchise as well
