Wouldn’t be surprised at all if Zendaya’s involvement in Shrek 5 sees an Ortega/Beetlejuice Beetlejuice effect where her fanbase (which also grew up on Shrek) shows up in droves. I think she’s got real box office bankability for pulling something like The Drama, and even Challengers, off.

  2. Couple points as I read it

    – “Superman did better than we anticipated” … so was he expecting under $600M?

    – “Romantic comedies used to do really well” — yeah, back when they featured stars like Julia Roberts.

    – I agree that a 15-minute preshow (ads + trailers) is fine. 20 mins is indeed too much

    – He talks about cotton candy. I think movie theaters need healthier options. I’d buy from concessions to support them if they offered something like Sun-Maid raisins and vitamin water

    – For me, talking is worse than texting. If someone has the phone’s brightness on the lowest setting and they decide to send a text, I wouldn’t notice

    >**Who are today’s bankable stars?**

    >Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio are still bringing people to the movies. Ryan Gosling — look what he has just done with “Project Hail Mary.” I would add that the success of “Marty Supreme” was on Timothée Chalamet. Zendaya and Tom Holland are the next generation. Austin Butler is a rising star.

oh this sub is not gonna like that paragraph

  4. Having a message at the beginning telling people to turn their phones off is not trying hard

  5. Talking, texting or having have a crying baby should be grounds for immediate removal from the theater, period. That is not an unreasonable ask to police for things to ruin peoples immersion in what they paid you for.

  6. Trailers are a part of the moviegoing experience. Hell I have memories of seeing the Word Trade Center Spider-Man trailer in front of Jurassic Park 3

  7. Without taking anything away from actors and actresses, without questioning their talent, I really don’t think the Star System still exists. If we’re talking about new generations and talent in general, I definitely think young actors and actresses are all top-notch.

I went to see The Drama and these three girls a few rows ahead of me spent 20 minutes on their phones, playing games, taking phone calls and then just left

  9. I really don’t understand the need for trailers anymore.

Play movies at their starting time and play them more times in a day. We all can watch the trailers we want whenever we want

Before theaters had reserved seating I understand playing adds and trailers but now people don’t need to get to the theater early.

I like the trailers, but dislike the commercials. My regales are locked in 25 min pre show package, so it’s easy for me to show up late.

I also never see people texting. More often I see people checking social media, because they are so addicted that the movie cannot hold their attention and they need another dopamine hit.

If theaters invested in ushers who actually warn rude people and kick them out of the theater after a warning, ticket sales might go up 10% or more.

I have taught myself to sit in the front two rows of a theater and enjoy a movie to reduce the likelihood of an annoying, obnoxious person dampening my experience.

Creating a luxurious atmosphere has been a priority, getting rid of bad behavior is the last barrier to what theaters have been doing with leather recliners, smaller setup of seats for most auditoriums, reserved seats and more food options.

  12. At least Alamo Drafthouse requires you to use your phone during movies now to order 😒

LOL. Zendaya could open a solo film for $15 million. “Drama” was promoted at full capacity for six months, and no one cares. All her “successes” are ensembles and franchises that would have made their money without her.

Tom Holland has failed ALL of his solo projects. No one goes to see them. If it weren’t for Spider-Man and his encounter with Zendaya, everyone would have forgotten about him long ago.

Austin Butler is a nobody. Not a single one of his solo films has been a success. He is industry plant.

    They’re all fake stars.
