I do find it interesting that she doesn’t really go for conventional films. For her smaller films she tries to mix it up. If she decides to just do a more traditional romcom or romance film.I think it would open in the 25-30 range but that just doesn’t seem to be what interests her.

  2. She’s definitely a draw, but by indie movie standards she’s also benefited a lot from relatively enormous marketing pushes. So many smaller movies just get sent off to die regardless of the stars involved or the quality.

it’s funny that her and chalamet are in dune together because they’re both at the same point in their careers now where they can throw in some artsier movies amidst their more commercial fares and get people to show up because they’re in them

Doesn’t matter if she appears in 10 movies all grossing 1 billion. this place will still be upset about her for whatever reason

  5. Not really? Challengers made $96 million on a $55 million budget most likely barely breaking even if at all, The Drama might also have a rather hard time breaking even and at best it‘s only turning a small profit. Spider-Man and Dune really cannot count as they are huge IPs. So where exactly is she the Indie Box Office Queen?

  6. Every month, when a smaller film comes out and does well, a new “queen/king” is born, and then the next one comes out. I like her as an actress, even if not at the highest level, but in this case, the film was of interest (the film is truly a gem).

Basically saying she isn’t a draw and non ip movies won’t make money.

  8. I don’t really understand this search for the next big stars, next big box office draw, next indie queens and kings, etc.

Everyone online, especially in this sub, talks about how the business is radically different than in the 90’s and 2000’s, and yet we’re looking for patterns and measures of success that don’t really exist anymore.

Even me, i still have these old reflexes sometimes, “x movie worked or floped because this actor’s presence helped it or not”.

But with all the fragmented audiences we have now, the truth is more complex, and a multitude of factors can make or break a film, far beyond actors’ star power or lack thereof.

Also this is America we’re talking about. It was obvious clingers wasn’t going to attract the 50% of Americans that elected this current admin, are pro-Jesus and traditional family values, and probably weren’t interested in an indie film with a POC lead, queer undertones, and a potential threesome.

Challengers was a success based on what it was up against. You’re acting like 46million profit is chump change but I’d prefer hearing what the creators thought of that profit
