Been following the box office since Barbenheimer and while it's interesting when there are huge bombs like Flash, Captain Marvel, Joker: Folie A Deux, Elio, etc., it honestly is more exciting when a film exceeds expectations.

And more than Barbenheimer, more than Project Hail Mary, even more than Sinners, this is the most exciting and interesting success story I've seen since chartwatching.

    • Top Gun: Maverick, Wicked, Inside Out 2, etc. were huge blockbusters that were expected to do well, had big marketing campagins and just overperformed. This is a small film that made the festival circuit and had a a decent but not overwhelming advertising push.
    • It's an original film – not based on any big franchise in TV or Movies, and not based on a huge celebrity.
    • This is in wide release but not exactly a huge one – Box Office Mojo lists it at just being in 2,655. Sheep Detectives is in more theaters with 3,207 and Passenger which just opened was in 2,534 but opened to $8M.
    • It rose during it's second weekend and could even rise during it's third weekend despite it not being a Christmas season release.
    • It's has A TON OF COMPETITION from films that appeal to wider audiences.
      • Michael, and The Devil Wears Prada 2 are both PG-13 rated films and in more theaters when this opened. In it's first weekdays, it beat both films.
      • The Mandalorian and Grogu opened the week later both PG films and are in more theaters and is tracking to outgross it in dailies later this week.
      • Compare this to Sinners which had a two week headstart before Thunderbolts* came out and Weapons which was out after F4 had two weeks and when there weren't any big summer blockbusters left
    • It's one of the most acclaimed films of the year already with the momentum getting people to mount a campaign for Inde Navarrette for Awards buzz similar to Amy Madigan for Weapons, and who'll get a ton of opportunities because of this.
    • Similarly, we have a new face in horror to look out for as people are immediately interested in what Curry Barker has next similar to what happened to other acclaimed debuts such as Hereditary, Get Out, RAW, Barbarian, etc.
    • Because this hasn't opened in a lot of countries yet, the acclaim and buzz has gotten people out of the U.S. interested in this film. Anecdotally, I know people here who can't wait to watch it this weekend when it opens.

I said during the weekend that Mando might've been #1 but Obsession is the real winner of the weekend. Well to go further, The Devil Wears Prada 2 might be the top movie of May but Obsession is the real winner of May.

WOM on this is insane, I get your feeling. Holding against giant movies and blockbusters being a Sub 1M horror movie is insane

It’s definitely my favorite since terrifier 3. Love following these horror box offices

The first sign of a potential break-out hit was when Focus Features beat out A24 and NEON in a bidding war for the film at TIFF, estimated to be $14M for a worldwide deal, excluding France, Australia, New Zealand and Russia, with Blumhouse joining later on as a co-branded release (Blumhouse was already onboard for Curry Barker’s next film).

But nobody knew that it would get past $100M+ domestically until last week, and at this point, it may beat Mandalorian’s dailies either today or tomorrow.

    4. My 68 year old aunt went to see it with her two kids. It’s definitely mainstream by now. I posted about it telling ppl to run to see it, I’m sure there are many like me

It’s up there and I’m happy for it, but I think Ne Zha 2 pulling off what it did is still more impressive

I love that not only is it original and small budget, it is motivating people to see other things at the theater.

The legs of a film is generally much more indicative of a film’s quality than reviews, which is why it’s fun to watch how far some of these films can run
