The digital release doesn’t seem to hurt it much.
1B-1.02B final vs 1.360B from The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Universal/Illumination/Nintendo can be happy with this result, but in order to avoid another significant decrease, they‘ll have to improve on the quality or else this was the last time a Mario film earns 1B+!

Great weather in Europe killed Mario. That’s a 56% drop from last weekend.
Mario should still limp over a billion but its probably going happen middle of June.
JudyHoppsFan1 on
Ooh, we’re getting so close! It passes Despicable Me 2 and 4, Oppenheimer, and The Lion King (1994) to be the highest-grossing film close to $1 billion. I still think it’s gonna make it. The physical media doesn’t happen until next month.

Grogu killed Mario internationally.

There’s no way this movie won’t make a billion. Either Universal will give it another three weeks to make $21 million, or they’ll just wait for the new Minions and sell double tickets to add a couple million and announce a $1 billion final
Low_Zombie9914 on
If this movie is ACTUALLY going to make a Billion (and it probably won’t) it’s going to need WEEKS of playing or s Minions Double feature.
They’re cutting it WAY too close

I hope it won’t need a double feature with Minions and Monsters, but if the movie ends up with $990 million, I hope Illumination is smart enough to do it if they want another movie to make $1 billion. I think it’s still reach $1 billion, but at least they should wait another three weeks.
purple_parachute_guy on
ADHD pacing, low effort humor, and low effort story all hurt the overall gross. If Illumination can put in a little extra effort into the quality next time, they could probably tack on an extra 400-500 million onto its global gross.

It will pass $1 billion. But will take another 2-3 weeks. It’s good for Mario, but they need to hire better writers otherwise Universal can only dream about next film passing $1 billion. I’m a big fan of Mario, so pls hire better writers.

Congrats, Mario. The brand proved itself once again

Well, it passed DM4 last week, but it is showing signs of slowing down now. It’ll likely reach $1 billion but barely. I don’t think it’ll do enough to pass DM3’s $1.03 billion.

This should hit $980M this week, next weekend I can expect this around $985M – $990M.

This WILL hit $1b now.
Dropped 33% for the last 7 days globally, If it does that again this time next week, it should just get close to $990m, then $996m, then $1b.
So it may take 3 more weeks.
IF it starts suffering 50% drops, it’s a bit harder. (after 4 more weeks it’ll be at $994m).

OOF… it likely got affected by the heat wave happening in Europe which looks like the $1B mark is getting is in jeopardy of trying to cross that mark just before Toy Story 5 debuts unless if it sees a recovery and the heat wave cools down

Toy story 5 definitely gonna be the #1 animated movie of the year.
