Yeah, I was worried this would happen. Ok domestically, weak internationally.

Not even hitting $150M worldwide on its opening weekend is really bad for a Star Wars movie.

GapHappy7709 on
following the 2.5 rule it needs 415M or so to break even, and this opening is even lower than solo’s and that movie ended with 392M. i think it does a bit better than that but just breaking movie is bad for the first star wars movie in 7 years.

ouch thats lower than Solo’s 65M debut

Even with the cheapest Disney Star Wars price tag, breaking even looks to be an uphill battle.

Mando opened everywhere this weekend but South Korea. Its a terrible opening for a new Star Wars movie. It’ll probably ends up around 350-400m worldwide….Thunderbolts, Indy 5, Captain America Brave New World and Black Adam numbers.

>The Mandalorian and Grogu, a Star Wars film, opened to $145m globally.
A mere $5m higher than *Black Adam*’s worldwide debut of $140m. The box office landscape completely shifted after its release.

Im sure they will advertise it as the biggest movie on Disney plus when it hits streaming in about 4 weeks

I don’t remember how the TV series fared in the rest of the world, but I think this confirms that Star Wars is still a reliable hit in some areas. Sure, this result is a bit of a disaster, but it’s a TV series that’s coming to the cinema.

Glad that this isn’t doing too well tbh. This was just peak laziness, just watched it and it legit is just 3 episodes of the show stitched together, and not even good episodes of the show. It also looks worst than season 1 somehow, which is crazy since this still had a 160 million dollar budget. Usually don’t like talking about the movie itself in this sub, but star wars will not last long in the box office if they keep making nostalgia slop like this connect to an animated tv show that most people haven’t watched (I am a fan of the clone wars btw).
Even if this movie breaks even due to it’s budget, we should not be celebrating this getting less or barely as much as Solo, and refusing to move on from the past, this is like the problem the MCU has had but on steroids, because at least the MCU is clearly has begun to listen to criticism, the tv shows have gotten way better and have showrunners now, they slowed their output, and are focusing on x men after avengers uses the last nostalgia they have left..
At this point they have to create something new, the good will from milking original and prequel nostalgia will not last much longer. Do something from before the prequels that’s good (not acolyte) or past the sequels. Because unless you’re a hardcore fan of the animated clone wars TV this Filoni stuff is not hitting, and even then the animated tv stuff is better than any live action show he’s ever made lol.

The international numbers are pretty disappointing, considering the studio was expecting $80M. Solo: A Star Wars Story made $179M overseas in total, do you think this movie will even manage to beat that?

My local theatre has been running it with completely empty seats since it’s release and in 3d no less. Star Wars has never been popular in India, so I wonder why they even bothered to release it in such a semi-urban area where I’m from. I’m going to see it tomorrow though.

This probably breaks even or gets roughly in that field. Disney gets a nicer domestic cut than most distributors.

Honestly, domestic revenue was a little better than expected, but international revenue was very disappointing. I think Disney and Lucasfilm should really take a new mainstream trilogy seriously. The opening weekend revenue seems comparable to Project Hail Mary, but Legs might not be comparable at all.

I went into it with mid expectations and it was lower than what I expected. Seriously the only good thing about this movie is the soundtrack and sound effects. Some funny moments, some cute moments but overall this was apex mid. A fastfood of a movie. Thank god it shouldn’t earn a lot and I hope the gosling star wars one will be much better. Oh and the cinematography is one of the worst I have ever seen and the action alternates between very good and super dull and boring
And no, it’s not even a good kids movie, hoppers by Pixar was much better

Aaaaand it’s lower than Solo’s overseas opening which at the time was already seen as a disappointment. Which combined with domestic, ends up opening to less than Solo worldwide.

Ouch thats a low number to start with, this seems unlikely to have really good legs that are needed to break even

I honestly thought it still had a decent shot considering how popular baby yoda is but I guess not a lot of people want to go to the theaters to watch a movie based on a streaming show.
I don’t really get why Disney has more faith in the starfighter movie than in the Mando movie.
I think the biggest challenge is how well Episode 10 is going to do. If that doesn’t do well then maybe it would be time to panic. Even TROS made $1B. If it does well then it’s a sign Disney should stick to that instead of stand alone movies.
