I mean they can still be top tier if they make a top tier product the brand is there but it like the mcu and Dcu now where it can’t just coast of the characters and Ip and it lives and dies based on the quality of the film itself

If you told me, riding high off the Force Awakens and its goodwill, back in 2015 that this would be the state of the franchise a decade later I’d have thought you were having a laugh.

      What’s a “top tier franchise”?

The MCU had a comparable film a year ago (Thunderbolts*) which was a movie team-up of characters from their streaming shows. And it had a larger budget. These two movies will likely be very close when the final total for The Mandalorian and Grogu is in.

Star Wars hasn’t had the Avatar-type consistency in this century unless you only count the Skywalker Star Wars films and even then, some of them dipped. In 2002, Attack of the Clones was the 4th biggest movie of the year worldwide. Solo was #24 worldwide (insane, but it was a strong year) and Star Wars came back with a billion dollar movie 18 months later (and it wasn’t even good).

    4. I think the context is important. It’s returning to the cinema with a film tied to a TV series and which proves itself to be a special in its own right. It’s not returning with episode 10 or something similar.

I still can’t believe Disney managed to turn Star Wars, arguably the biggest cultural event for multiple generations, into an absolute non-event.

Critics should not be calling a Star Wars film boring, that’s a huge blow. I mean how ineffective do you have to be to make Star Wars boring? It’s Star Wars.

Even the prequels had show stopping moments between trade war drama.

I guess this is what you get when you take over what should have been a cash cow with zero planning.

And it’s even harder than Marvel for new fans to casually jump in now with the different projects taking place in different time periods with reckless abandon and no cohesion.

People always compared the two in 2015, Jurassic World losing a bit under half of its box office in ten years compared to what’s looking like 80%+ for Star Wars is crazy.

SW started much higher and ended way lower. A mismanagement of epic proportions.

“Star Wars” and “Mid-Tier Franchise” in the same sentence…

Middling reviews do not help. Plus, people now know they can wait a bit and see it on Disney+
