The Da Vinci Code was released 20 years ago this weekend. Based on the bestselling novel of the same name, the $125 million film was a box office hit, grossing $217 million domestically and $760 million worldwide despite negative reviews and controversy. It later spawned two sequels.

There are so many problems that I have with this film:

      1. It shamelessly attacks religion based on flimsy-at-best evidence.

      2. It’s BORING!

      3. It’s needlessly brutal in places.

This movie is one of those “movies that were big when they released but are now forgotten.”

This movie made over $700 million worldwide yet I never see any mention of this movie.

I just remember the movie cut like half of the book out and overall wasn’t a good movie (Angels & Demons was more entertaining). The cast was good. Hanks was the perfect Langdon or maybe I just like Tom Hanks idk

    4. The latest Langdon book came out just last year. Heard it will get adapted into a Netflix series

    5. I had no idea Inferno was made into a movie. I’ll have to give it a watch!

$760M is $1.22B today. Thats insane. Definitely the peak of “modern day historical mystery” films like National Treasure and Sahara (to a lesser extent)

    7. Fun fact: this movie was Rated R in my country, because the majority population is Catholic, and they deemed it blasphemous and anti-Catholic. It was almost banned a few times.

I kinda agree with the age rating (at least in my country), only because I was a dumb kid who watched it anyway and believed it was factual xD

      Edit: added sentence

People forget how huge the book was and how much hype there was for this, that’s how it was able to gross so much despite reviews and negative word of mouth

    10. Illuminati (Angels & Demons) is the better book (dare I say Brown‘s best), unfortunately the movie isn’t.

If I am not wrong, this movie at the time of its release, peaked at 20th highest grossing film of all time worldwide

    12. I never read these books but I enjoyed this and angels and demons lol. Had no clue this got mostly negative reviews

I love this one. I still have the DVD gift set with a cryptex like in the movie! I wish they had those giftsets more often for Blu-rays.

I remember when there were a ton of people picketing outside the theater and passing out pamphlets to people about how offensive the movie was to their religion. It was so interesting. I’d never seen anything like it before and haven’t since.

I’ve always loved this movie, though. And I remember when I read the book, it was really gripping. It was written in a way that made it really hard to put it down. I’m not sure how I’d feel about the book now, but I watched the movie just a year ago and absolutely loved it, even more than when I was younger.
