Box Office: ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ Remains No. 1 With $43 Million; ‘Mortal Kombat II’ Launches to $40 Million Domestic, Adds $23 Million Overseas For $63 Million Global Debut

Miranda Priestly bodied Johnny Cage this weekend. 40 million domestic debut is good enough considering it is 2.3 million shybof it’s predecessor’s 42.3 million cume (courtesy of the pandemic and day-fate streaming drop) but th 23 million overseas debut is just straight up bad. 200 million break-even point looks to be tall order.

overseas is awful

MK2 should cross 150m but won’t hit 200m break even. Although heavy DOM skew might let
lower the breakeven

INSANE…, and not in a good way.
200M+ global final is impossible now.
Let’s hope it can at least reach 150M.
The combination of Michael and The Devil Wears Prada 2 totally destroyed it internationally.

I’m not surprised Mortal Kombat is underperforming.
The franchise has one appeal, and that’s it combat. And I saw the first movie….its fight scenes were pretty mid. Lots of camera cutting, unimpressive angles and blocking, muddy visuals and lighting. Coreagraphy was weak, looked more like awkward shuffling than fighting. Its like they only cared about the bloody fatalities, and not the fight leading up to them.
This franchise has one thing going for it, and they messed it up. Now you expect me to be excited for a sequel that came out half a decade later, with the same middling direction?

Not the first time a Mortal Kombat film has been dethroned from first place….
The 2021 one was in a two-way tie with Demon Slayer, and had a steep second weekend decline, with Demon Slayer taking the #1 spot. This one was in a close two-way tie with Devil Wears Prada 2 and it seems like that the latter has won out.

Maybe keeping the original October release date wasn’t a bad idea after all

You can’t fight the Runway, Cage. Wonder if this means Disney will try to get IMAX screens on DWP2 in a few weeks’ time? I would.

Maybe moving MKII from Oct 2025 to May 2026 against Michael & The Devil Wears Prada II wasn’t the best decision?

MK is very sad, I wonder why this franchise has no staying power overseas even after all these years

I see people have been saving up their puns and bad mortal combat jokes.

I think the fairly terrific WOM for Mortal Kombat should hopefully give it better legs than normal

They shoulda done more to appeal to non-fans or something. I’ve never played or known someone who plays this game. Same with Street Fighter, but I’m actually planning to watch that since Orville Peck is in it – the power of appealing to different audiences!

The best reviewed Mortal kombat movie. The only Mortal kombat movie NOT Rotten on RT . Much better than the previous one. I think it’s gonna be fine in the long haul. I loved it.

Damn 40M domestic solid opening for me with legs can get to 100M so not so bad but saw the overseas number…yikes did not expect that. 200M was the target for me don’t think that’ll happen now.
