Thunderbolts* was released last year this week. Later known alternatively as The New Avengers, it serves as the 36th MCU film and the final one in Phase 5. Despite receiving positive reviews, it underperformed at the box office, grossing $190.3M Dom & $382.4M WW.

Very pleased with how this turned out. I liked the comedy, the action, and the relationship between Bob and Yelena works so well.
This film may not have done well at the box office, but it still showed that Marvel IS indeed capable of making good films. The fact that they had most of the scripts ready before rolling cameras probably helped too.
Ashame this movie underperformed at the box office. Of all the Marvel Studios projects last year, I thought this was probably the best one. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it had some interesting ideas and was helped by strong performances, especially from Florence Pugh, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and David Harbour.
Meh, maybe I have superhero fatigue but kind of zoned off this one, tbh.
I feel like the performance of this film makes hard to argue that superhero fatigue isn’t here. As this had solid to great word of mouth, but didn’t really translate in legs, like Guardians 3 did. Couple that with Fantastic 4’s worldwide and Superman’s international performance. Its why I’m hesitant to give any bold predictions regarding Doomsday and absolutely am avoiding giving any Secret Wars predictions. Because last year’s superhero box office, definitely felt like general audience is slowly moving on, despite 3 of the 4 films all having good reception.
Disappointing that it didn’t do well due to Disney+ impact on some of its characters that fans hasn’t seen those on streaming
Very solid mcu flick that unfortunately had to pay for the sins of the disney+ shows. Genuinely deserves better
My favorite superhero film of last year easily. Unfortunately, being a. Follow up to stuff like Black Widow and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier made it doomed from the beginning.
Still this director’s highest grossing movie to be released the same year as a Fantastic 4 reboot
Real shame Marvel finally puts out a film that doesn’t just feel like a 2 hour mediocre episode of a TV show and it underperforms and barely breaks even
Silver lining is the director got a bigger role at least, but man this deserved better
This is the kind of movie that fits the phrase “it’s for the arts not the charts”
At least it’s the highest grossing A24 film…
I feel that if this and Brave New World swapped release dates, this would do much better. I feel like Deadpool and Wolverine helped regain a lot of goodwill for Marvel, but then Brave New World was considered really mid and it hurt people’s excitement for Thunderbolts and even F4.
The epitome of “deserved more”.
Honestly, I think Marvel’s objective lack of support for it is what doomed it. These aren’t just films, they’re also toy commercials meant to sell these characters to you as merch. This was the first PG-13 MCU film to not get a single Lego set, its action figures released months after the film, it didn’t even get a complete Funko set that’s how unsupported it was. Compared to Captain America and especially F4, which got all of the above and more in droves, and Marvel couldn’t even pretend to the public that they had faith or were excited about this, which is insane because it was a great film.
You can’t expect an audience to be excited for something you aren’t crazy about, and that’s what Marvel told everyone when they gave huge campaigns to Cap and F4 but not this.
Really liked how this focused on mental health tbh
it wasn’t fatigued, this movie wasn’t as good as y’all think it is. Nobody cares about ghost from antman, they used a guy from a disney plus show (captain america dude), task master.. yeah no comment on that. yelena and red guardian and bucky are cool but they could only do so much.
It’s Black Widow 2 but with “kids, depression is bad…” message. It didn’t deserve to perform worse than the rest of the marvel slop, but it absolutely doesn’t deserve the glaze it got
My least favorite MCU movie of recent times.
