Posted this in the other thread but reposting as it holds true here.

Box office numbers aside, it’s amusing to me how people defended the movie for its whiplash pacing and clear structuring to suit TikTok attention spans; only for Miyamoto himself to come out yesterday and essentially confirm that toddler stimulant chopped into social media-friendly chunks was what they were angling for.

He said they constructed the film out of “30 interchangeable 3-minute ‘units’ that totalled 90 minutes,” and went on to say:

      >”Illumination’s technique involves a lot of swapping and rearranging of those units. Another thing is, do we want parents sitting there out of a sense of responsibility for taking their children to the movie theater, or do we have a story that’s moving for the parents but the children are running around the theater? I’ve always wanted to make a movie that isn’t like that; so in that sense, I think it was good that we decided to make it a fast-paced 90 minutes that would be over in no time to catch your breath.”

$1B is very tight, but I think it’s gonna get there. Universal will most certainly put it in double features with Minions if close enough.

It will either barely miss or cough over the billion. The Moana 2 phenomenon.

    4. I’d assume it will be at around $925m-ish by next weekend, so it’s probably going to hit a billion but not till the end of the month.

Ok a Billie is a safe. Honestly this is still an amazing run, but I do stand by my belief that this could have been a PHENOMENAL 1.5b run if it wasn’t such a mid film. Even Mario fans don’t like this one much, the hype pretty much fizzled out after the opening because of it.

Actual revenue in Japan may have exceeded $20 million, meaning the film has surpassed $500 million internationally at this point?

    7. JudyHoppsFan1 on

Almost to $900 million! Only $106 million away from $1 billion! We can do this!

    8. PatternPlenty1107 on

I was hoping for 900M+, because of the golden week in Japan and South Korea‘s opening…, but it still came close.

      WORLDWIDE

      1. wknd: 375M vs 372M (-3M)
      2. wknd: 693M vs 628M (-65M)
      3. wknd: 875M vs 750M (-125M)
      4. wknd: 1.022B vs 831M (-191M)
      5. wknd: 1.155B vs 894M (-261M)

1.1B+ is officially dead dead, but 1B+ is still likely.

      990M-1.030B final.

      What do you guys think?

I thought it would have hit $900M with public holidays accross the world. 1B gonna be a close call.

Oh that’s a great Japan hold and super nice opening for SK.

With those and the great hold this weekend, this is for sure getting over 1bil. I still think it gets to 1.05b

    11. Temporary-Body-3099 on

Minecraft had $873M at same point,
Although Mario has one additional week of Japan and 2 extra days in the US
Never thought my $1.05B expectation would be a highball

    12. PatternPlenty1107 on

      Just for fun…

      AFTER 5TH WEEKEND:

      1. Moana 2 – 883M (1.06B)

      2. Toy Story 4 – 859M (1.07B)

      3. Incredibles 2 – 857M (1.24B)

      4. Super Mario Bros. – 1.155B (1.36B)

      5. Frozen II – 1.104B (1.45B)

      6. Inside Out 2 – 1.350B (1.7B)

      7. Zootopia 2 – 1.422B (1.87B)

    13. GoldenGirlsFan213 on

Considering how we haven’t even hit 900 million yet, this movie is gonna fall to the Moana 2 phenomenon, super big opening, absolute dog shit legs until stabilization and than it just squeaks over a billion
      Or barely miss it

1.1 billion+ is as dead as disco

1.0 to 1.05 billion final likely

    14. newjackgmoney21 on

Minecraft was at $873.4M. Minecraft finished at 960m.

This weekend was a holiday weekend in a lot of markets. Like everyone has been saying for the past couple weeks 1b is going to be close. I still think it pulls a Jurassic World Dominion

    15. $1.03-1.045 billion final most likely, unless the May Day boost was a fluke.

    16. gamesofduty on

It should be finish around 9 times the budget at least would silly if it finish at $999M, it should definitely beat DM4 to the become the highest grossing sequel not to gross $1B, the maximum global gross should be between $1.02B – $1.03B WW.

    17. The movie will likely show where the Mario film series will stand at the box office in the future. The first one generated a hype, which based on the first real Mario movie. A hype that, of course, can’t simply be replicated. Whether the movie reach the billion or not, that will probably be the future range for Mario movies: 800 million to 1 billion. Which is, without a doubt, a great performance still. It’s better than anything else in the genre anyway and is still one of the biggest animated movies.

    18. ShawarmaEater13 on

I would really like to see this movie get to 1 billion. It wasn’t for me but we need more fun brainless movies that take kids to the cinemas and builds the next generation of movie goers
