Here’s a list of the top 25 films at the domestic box office based on adjusted gross. I compiled this from various sources, so the figures are approximate. I’ve focused more on placing them within ranges rather than exact numbers.

Some interesting facts:

• Only two films have crossed $2B+ in adjusted gross, while all 23 films have surpassed the $1B mark.

• Four Star Wars films are in the all time top 25 (probably the biggest IP?).

• Steven Spielberg has the most films on the list:

4) E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

7) Jaws.

18) Jurassic Park.

22) Raiders of the Lost Ark

I wonder if anything in the foreseeable future can hit $1B unadjusted domestically.

The original One Hundred And One Dalmatians is the one that suprised me the most. Turns out that movie’s re-release was out grossing even the newest Disney movies at the time. The 1991 re-release was even the 20th highest grossing movie of that year

Just took a year of the film and calculated inflation? Many films have had re-releases.

The graduate is wild to me. According to box office Mojo it made 104 million in its original run back in 1967-68. That’s just over a billion today.

  5. I think ranking ticket sales adjusted to population size would be interesting, it would produce a list of x% of the population saw this film in the cinema.
