Looks like $7M+ 3rd FRI for Mario Galaxy. Should lead to $30M-ish 3rd weekend, which will be -56%. That’s quite rough. Normally, films stabilise at this point in the run. Cume will be $350M by SUN. There is a possibility it misses the $400M final from here.

Never woulda thought it might miss $400M but can’t say I’m too surprised, I was dragged to see this twice and though I enjoyed it enough the first time, the second viewing just was rough, I mean this movie is straight up made for babies
Korea is looking at $6-7 mil run, only 1/3rd of the $18 mil first movie made, Japan is gonna drop by 40-50% atleast. I had more modest expectations with $1.05 bil total. Now its a coin toss if it crosses $1B or not
I hope this will somehow convince illumination to create a better story for the next one
I think visually and in terms of pure fun this sequel is still good but it lacks depths and story which were more present in the first one
Illumination should actually start putting a plot in these movies, even the general audience tire of jingling keys after a while
Might not miss $400M but missing Moana 2(seems locked) and even potentialy Minecraft, Zootopia 2 and Lilo & Stich is still a massive dissapointment with the start it had.
Again why people pretended the novelty and quality factor won’t affect this movie at all is still beyond me.
Mario 2 will still be a massive success but the potential here was massively squandered. If they decide to churn out another plotless video game cutscene for Mario 3 its gonna drop even further
There’s a chance might not get any 500M (DOM) movie till Toy Story 5, or even worse .. till Spiderman 😭
I’m expecting Michael to make about 300M, Prada 2 and Minions to make around 350-400M, Mando about 250-300M, Supergirl and Disclosure Day about 200-250M.
I have no idea why it’s falling so much, I think it’s a much, much better movie than the first one. I found it hilarious and visually it was impressive.
Imagine telling someone Project Hail Mary would only be $10m below Mario in its third weekend this time last month
Said from day one this movie gonna be sub $400m, sub $1b. Got shouted at, sworn at and downvoted.
Seems like I was right all along.
Looking at this film again, one of the reasons the pacing and storytelling feel so bad is it completely ignores conventional structure. Number-heavy post incoming, I did the math.
This movie is 90 minutes long (on the nose, almost eerily so; the credits roll at 1:30:02). The supposed main adventure, going to rescue Rosalina, does not kick off until 30 minutes into it. And even then, we don’t follow Peach and Toad for a while after they leave, with Mario and Luigi continuing to dick around in the Mushroom Kingdom and bee planet until 50 minutes in; at which point the dumbass Wart casino sidequest is just concluding. Mind you, this is almost ***two thirds in***, and almost nothing has happened narratively yet! We should be gearing up for Act 3 by now.
Ideally, your call to adventure in one of these basic ‘save the princess’ flicks should happen in the first 15-20 minutes, then the rest of the film be that quest taking place. By the time the group finally reunites in the spaceport to ***actually begin the fucking main adventure*** and not just be diverted with inconvenient side missions, we are at the 60 minute mark! Less than half an hour to go! (Of which they waste another 5 on the fucking dinosaur baby scene!) It would be like if Star Wars spent two thirds of its runtime in Mos Eisley, with 25 minutes of that in the bloody cantina.
So, all told, the movie spends a whopping **20 minutes** or so on the actual core plot thread, and ***the remaining 80 minutes*** on filler and side quests.
TL;DR, I know, but if you were wondering why this film feels so aimless and narrative-free, that’s why. It essentially has a 60 minute Act 1, skips any substantive Act 2 and goes right for Act 3. What a fuckup, how did this get approved?
Would a sub $400m finish mean <$1 billy worldwide. Hard not to see that as a disappointment but I think reflective of the films quality and hopefully they spend more time on the script for the next film
