The Wild was released 20 years ago this week. The $80 million film was a box office disappointment, grossing $37.4 million domestically and $102.3 million worldwide, and received negative reviews, with many critics comparing it unfavorably to Madagascar.

I can see the Madagascar comparisons, but I’ve always thought of this as a Finding Nemo ripoff with the whole “parent crossing dangerous environments to find their kid” thing, just with zoo animals.

I remember seeing TV ads for this when I was in middle school and thinking it looked so ugly.

  3. My parents and uncle both bought my brother the DVD of this for his birthday. We watched it a ton. I actually see the DVD in a lot of thrift stores.

That tagline is just about th worst I’ve ever seen.

“Here’s a movie about stuff that will shit on your carpet”.

I don’t even find it terrible, I actually thought the Koala was pretty funny and the villain’s goal is so bizarre I wished he had more screentime, but the animation is so weird. They tried to make the characters look less cartoony than Madagascar while trying to make the movements even more cartoony than Madagascar and the end result almost falls in the uncanny valley territory.

Honestly the film is just really boring beyond the villain. I can see why nobody really cared about it

  7. I saw this in theaters as a kid, but remember nothing about the actual movie. I had a McDonald’s toy that was the lion throwing a turtle shell like a bowling ball that I liked a lot though

  8. I’ve never even heard about this🤯 And it’s a Disney movie?! Damn this must have FLOPPED…

There are plenty of failed animated that weren’t great, but I vaguely remember their existence at least.

Oddly, this is the first movie I remember ever seeing in theaters when I was 4. I remember absolutely nothing about it.

Disney distributed this? Man it’s crazy how many movies just fly under the radar.

as a kid i was obsessed with this movie for some reason. I loved the animation, the concept of leaving the zoo and going to Africa. Yes I recognized that it was Madagascar meets Finding Nemo but for whatever reason 2006 me was absolutely obsessed with this film

I watched it again not even 5 years later and was baffled by how bad it really was lmao. Just cringe writing, awful jokes, nonexistent story and character development. But it still looks pretty okay. I just like animals I guess. 4/10 film

Such a terrible movie. I still get nightmares over that Wildebeast musical number

  13. Wild how a Disney movie with an $80M budget barely cleared $100M worldwide. That’s rough even for that era.
