Dang, Illumination sure knows how to budget their films. Their films look so good for how much they cost.

In case anybody wonders why this movie is so much cheaper than a Pixar movie, the answer is that Pixar does everything in-house while Illumination outsources a lot.

Pixar has 1200 employees, while Illumination only has 100-200 in their core studio and the rest are contractors or in their Paris studio.

Illumination’s most expensive film to date, and $10M more than the first movie.

But it will still break even in like 5 days.

Illumination’s most expensive film to date and it’ll still be beyond profitable. This studio never misses (in terms of profitability)

  5. How do dreamworks and illumination make great animation quality and yet cost less than you think while Disney and pixar spend 150-200m?

  6. Just $10 million more? *Damn*, Illumination continue to be the kings of smart fiscal spending. Given all the extra ***stuff,*** I was ready for a number closer to $150 million.

Man, I’m no Illumination fan, but I do wish that this was presented in expanded IMAX aspect ratio even if it’s just 1.90:1.

All the people clamoring Illumination for knowing how to “budget their movie”, but didn’t take into consideration about the animation being outsourced in France and probably some other animation sweatshop in Asia. Do you guys even care for the animators’ having livable wage or just want movies to be done as cheaply as possible and maximize profit?

  9. This is definitely going to be 2026’s first billion-dollar film, and it will be the highest-grossing film of 2026 until Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
