With 10 days of data since its March 20 release, Project Hail Mary is tracking ahead of every non-franchise original film released since Sinners. Its opening trajectory puts it on pace to potentially challenge Sinners' $279M domestic run, which was the only original film to crack the domestic top 10 in all of 2025.
Films included: Sinners, F1: The Movie, Weapons, Marty Supreme, Wuthering Heights, One Battle After Another, Materialists, and Companion. All data from Box Office Mojo through March 29, 2026. PHM line is truncated as the film is still in theaters — will update as more data comes in.
Methodology: Comparing cumulative domestic gross by days since release, so all films are on the same timeline regardless of when they came out.
PS: Happy to get feedback on the comparable set — are there other non-franchise originals from 2025-2026 you think belong here? I defined non-franchise as no prior film series, so I excluded sequels, remakes, and existing IP. Open to pushback on any of the inclusions too — F1 in particular is a grey area given the sport's brand recognition.

Is there a reason animation isn’t included here? I think including those would be good as the movie is playing a lot like a family film right now.
