The Martian and Gravity had not released in several international markets at this point, including China which was the biggest international market for each movie.
The high OW shocked me. The legs do not. Most things that pushed against a big OW will help the legs be excellent.

*Gravity* (2013), despite being only at $190m in its 2nd week, became the highest grossing movie of all these films, with $723m.
Eventually, *Interstellar* (2014) outgrossed it with $773m thanks to several re-releases. Its initial run was $681m.

This reminds me that Interstellar had (by Nolan standards) mixed critical reception when it opened, but people liked it:

blows my mind that neighbors had a bigger opening than interstellar

Aside from PHM gross, I think it’s success should also prove that unlike what someone people thought: Gravity would still be a hit if it was released now.

Okay box office noob here. When stats come out on like Saturday when the day hasn’t finished nor Sunday even got here yet… is it just major speculation based solely on Friday’s numbers? Or is there so much historical data now for movies that we literally only need 1 day (Thursday, or Friday) to accurately predict the whole weekend total?
