‘Project Hail Mary’ Has One Mission: Become Amazon MGM’s Big Box Office Statement – Amazon has only had a few blockbuster hits since entering the movie business. Ryan Gosling’s sci-fi epic aims to change that.

  1. Should this work, and I think it will, expect Amazon MGM to go all-in on becoming the sixth (or, should Paramount-WB somehow close, fifth) true theatrical major in town. There’s been a gap in the market ever since the “bit of everything” Fox was eaten up, and I expect Hopkins and his team to rise to meet it. All they really need are more in horror and animation, as well as a few blockbusters tailored for the young’uns.

The way the movie opens with the Amazon and MGM title cards felt so much more theatrical than previous movies Amazon have made. Nothing about it screamed “Amazon Original” or a “Prime movie”. Would be nice to see them become a proper cinema studio.

Amazon MGM, I highly suggest adding animated films to your release schedule. I know Sheep Detectives sorta counts since the sheep characters are CGI, but fully animated movies can do very well if you handle them well. They don’t even need to be solely films based on MGM properties like Pink Panther or Addams Family, they can be original concepts or ones based on books that can be potential goldmines.

Although I’d be happy to see newly created Pink Panther shorts made for theaters like the old days.

As much as I’m not a fan of Amazon, I do hope they manage to get their act together and evolve into a proper major studio, especially now that we’ve basically lost WB.
They could potentially step in and continue the auteur-driven studio identity that WB has cultivated over the past few years.

Their 2026 slate doesn’t give me much confidence, though. Project Hail Mary looks great, and The Sheep Detective Movie looks pretty bonkers, so it could work if it’s genuinely fun, but I have my doubts. As for Masters of the Universe, I’m not sure there’s much demand for it. It will have to be very good to avoid flopping, especially with its enormous budget of $170/$200M.
