A great article about Neon.

It may be specific to indie films, but the idea that most of Neon's revenue is generated after the theatrical run does put some box office disappointments into perspective. Theaters may simply become a way to advertise a film, the beginning of a long life.

Films like One Battle After Another that don't turn a profit in theaters shouldn't necessarily be written off as failures: they created an event, generated buzz, won an Oscar, so their numbers in TV, VOD and SVOD may well climb significantly down the line.

Neon grossed $69 million from TV and SVOD licensing in 2024. Neon has an output deal with Hulu that makes the Disney-owned streaming service the exclusive streaming home for its films after they leave theaters.

The company grossed an additional $30 million from selling digital and physical copies of its movies. This is a big reason Neon was able to turn a profit in 2020 despite not putting many movies in theaters.

this was said on this pretty much verbatim about a24 many times during marty supreme’s run, but a bunch of armchair experts swore up and down that that movie was never gonna be profitable. this is just how indie studios work, and a lot of people on this sub don’t look beyond the box office in terms of how different movie studios make profits
