The 1980-2010 era of movies is legendary, in terms of box office success. Movies like *Forrest Gump* ($679m) *A Beautiful Mind* ($317m) and even *The King’s Speech* ($430m) would not make those amounts if they released today.

    3. Unless you adjust for inflation, this chart is always going to have a heavy recency bias due to the simple act of inflation

    4. Inflation aside, the Academy really does kinda ignore megahits from 2005 on, huh?

    5. LOL, I was told repeatedly by this sub that OBAA couldnt possibly win best picture because it didnt turn a profit. LMAO

damn dances with wolves mad how much money??

I will say, a fair amount in the top 20 have really remained in the collective social consciousness. not saying that everyone can name them when something is referenced, but enough of them have a scene/quote that’s still widely used/quoted today. like my kid cousin hasn’t seen titanic but he uses the ‘it’s been 84 years’ gif constantly and was shocked when I told him where it’s from

    7. Wow I never would’ve guessed The Kings Speech is actually #6 unadjusted for inflation
