11 years after shitting the bed with Chicken Little, Disney realized they could still appeal to the furry crowd with one simple trick…
Making an actual good movie with appealing character designs lol
Zootopia is a very strong Disney film from the comedy, message, animation, and dialogue. Everyone talks about the social themes present, and for good reason.
One of my favorite movies of theirs. I was surprised seeing it get nearly 98 on RT 10 years ago, waited a week because I was on spring break to see it and it did live up to the hype! I followed the box office and was amazed to see this earn almost as much as Deadpool, a movie that I knew would break out based of my demographics and who I hung out with. And then watching it explode in China, especially after Kung Fu Panda 3 didn’t to this extent, was amazing. I don’t think I was ever so happy to see a movie hit a billion as originals never do, and the stars aligned perfectly for this.
Despite not having a car I tried my darndest to see it a second time in theaters, even learning bus transfers but couldn’t make it work. As soon as I got home from college that semester I got my first job and preordered the 3D bluray (remember that community the shock this was getting a 3D release after Frozen and Big Hero 6 were skipped?) with my first paycheck. It was still in my local 10 screen theater a week after Civil War opened but decided to pass as I had the blu preordered, and I knew as I only had my permit at the time no one would go with me. Ended up watching it a lot when I finally got the blu. And last week I bought the 10th anniversary pin in the parks before the scalpers bought them all later that day…
I do prefer the first but the second is worthy of doing a double feature with for rewatches and can proudly hold a candle to the first, that’s all I wanted. Now to see if my Amazon preorder of the 4K will actually go through…
“It’s called a hustle, Sweetheart”
Happy 10th Anniversary of the original Zootopia now that we got a sequel after nearly 10 years of waiting that did massive huge at the box office all thanks to China that love the Zootopia brand
Such a great movie. Really commendable how they were able to touch on discrimination in a way anyone could understand by using the different species of animals.
I used to wish they had gone with the original “Wild Times” pitch that was about the predators having to wear shock collars (the “taming party” deleted scene is one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve ever seen from Disney), but looking back it might have been a bit too dark and even prevented Zootopia from becoming the franchise it is today.
Can’t believe it’s been a decade now! Zootopia is among the best stuff Disney has put out within the last 10 years imo. Everything about it from the characters to the humor to the animation to the worldbuilding to the themes is just so good.

Great movie. I can’t believe it’s 10 years old now.
