After years in development hell and a ‘test footage leak’ led to a greenlit, Deadpool finally opened 10 years ago this week. The movie was a smash hit grossing $363.1 million domestically and $419.5 million internationally, a $782.6 million total worldwide gross. The film had a $58 million budget.

Ryan Reynolds is literally the only person that could play Deadpool. I can’t imagine any other actor who’s just as passionate about this character than Reynolds.
People were pleased to finally get an R rated superhero film (differentiating itself from the usual PG-13 stuff), the action is kick-ass, absolutely filled with fourth wall breaking humor, and even some genuine heart in the midst of everything.
What If I said this was better than Deadpool and Wolverine?
People forget how impactful and massive the marketing was before the movie: the X-Men at their absolute peak after Days of the Future Past; funny trailers with meta-comedy, something the industry wasn’t really betting on at the time; the first R-rated superhero movie in seven years since Watchmen; Reynolds’ charisma selling the spots; and an enormous opening week. Even though it was R-rated, there were teenagers in the theater.
A movie far more mainstream than it’s often given credit for, and thanks to that, Logan and Joker were able to be R-rated as well.
Ironically, Tom Rothman(who was the one who blocked Deadpool for years) greenlit Venom largely because of Deadpool’s success.
10 years ago?? Time flies
Ah yes.. I’ve remembered an R-Rated Superhero film of the X-Men franchise that I hasn’t seen until I’ve saw those two films in time for Deadpool and Wolverine after seeing on streaming a long time ago
Wow, 10 years? I’m still amazed by both this movie’s viral marketing and its budget. For a movie that cost only $58 million (I would’ve assumed it was more like $80–90 million), it really feels big-budget, with effective use of money and solid production overall. I read that the director used to work in the VFX department, and it really shows.
I still like this movie overall (maybe the best Deadpool movie), and I’m glad it finally made it out of development hell. Even though the humor is kind of a mixed bag. I laughed a lot, but some jokes made me go, “Huh?”
[If you want to relive it, here is the test footage that Ryan Reynolds leaked during the 2014 San Diego Comic Con weekend.](https://youtu.be/ikP9KG-HlnE?si=m75SAxMW343uGfcR)
The film had been in development hell since 2010. After the ravenous reception to the July 2014 leak, the film’s production moved quickly and the film finally got its release date a couple months later in September 2014.
I never cared for this. Too much juvenile humor that seemed targeted at 12 year old boys only. At least in the sequel, Deadpool was paired up with a straight man (Cable and Wolverine)
