In my opinion The Housemaid is the biggest surprise this year and one of the biggest surprises this decade at the very least.
I still don’t get how this film has done so incredible, tracking to hit over $400M worldwide! Minimal marketing, a pretty controversial actress playing the lead, and little to nobody talking about the actual movie itself.
Last year had a ton of horror movies like Sinners and The Conjuring breaking records too!

Do you mean 2025?
The Housemaid is a pretty popular book
Never underestimate wine moms
How could it really be anything but NZ2?
Definitely Ne Zha 2.
No one even had the right box office projection until weeks later.
Sinners, and I’m not going to argue with anyone about it, is a 100% original film
was F1 really a surprising over performance? it made 631.5M, and the budget estimates range from 200-300M. That isn’t bad, but it isn’t absurdly good either. did people think this movie would flop or something?
F1 is the one that surprised most people, they thought it wouldn’t even cross 300m.
anime as a whole taking the world by storm
obviously these films have always had their built in audience but even expanding it to KPop Demon Hunters. The WW Box Office crown, the streaming champion, the best return on investment all went to anime films
Housemaid’s legs are definitely a shock but this type of movie were used to being a 100 mil domestic film (maybe this is pre covid mind)
Sinners fits in the same boat. While its legs are UNDENIABLY impressive, its WW performance I feel like it knocks it down a peg
“Pretty controversial actress” lmao nobody gives a shit about that besides chronically online people. I imagine if you asked anybody over 35 who doesn’t spend all their time on Twitter and reddit what the controversy surrounding Sydney Sweeney is and they’ll go “what controversy?”
Is that even a question? Ne Zha 2 obviously. Rest are not even close.
Its Weapons considering its from director Zach Cregger who did well for this films in horror original IP like Weapons that surprisingly did really well
How is it surprising when it’s based on a best-selling book series?
Conjuring, I thought that shit was dead.
