  1. Melania is tracking to open with 5 million dollars at the domestic box office.

Send Help is tracking a 14 million dollars opening weekend at the domestic box office.

  2. God, I hope Send Help mops the floor with this documentary. Let great original films triumph over this fascist’s vanity project directed by a sex pest.

I’m excited for *Send Help*. Who the hell wants to see a self-indulgent documentary from Melania? It can only be the few left that are deep in the MAGA cult.

  4. – What a garbage article, it went on and on about Melania and barely talked about Send Help, which is a lot more highly anticipated as it is the first genre movie directed by Sam Raimi since 2009
    – Just learned that Melania is directed by Brett Ratner, which is not helping his dwindling career and reputation at this point
    – I bet Melania will not open to $5M unless America is filled with idiots

Spending 75m on a documentary is nuts. I don’t care how much money a company has. Back to back bombs for Amazon MGM.

  6. > $14M Send Help

I’d take the over given really strong WoM I’m seeing. It’s hopefully going to be fun to see a good meat n potatoes hollywood film succeed to end a rough January.

    > Social media is rife with theater maps showing auditoriums where only a smattering of tickets have been sold.

    🙄.

I saw a social media post that claimed the film was flopping because a showing in a major Jacksonville theater sold nothing. The only problem is that was 1/5 showtimes and the remaining 4/5 were ~1/3rd sold out (so >=50% of prime seats sold) so there’s no way that post was anything but political engagement bait.

The film’s opening day numbers are clearly fine despite political noise to the contrary (also note that unusually, this film is actually opening on a Friday instead of the current normal to split opening day across Thursday and Friday). If there’s a embarrassing number, I suspect it would be a steep drop on Sat/Sun. There are clearly some type of group tickets being sold on opening day but there is also a seemingly fine moderate pace of additional tickets in the theaters I’m spot checking.

They’re spending $35M to try and open this to a mid single digit number (while After Death, the recent doc comped in this article, I assume spent something like $5M on marketing). I think people are downplaying the role of marketing as a floor raiser given that surprisingly there’s some appeal for the film (I think due to it being softly also sold as something closer to a Trump 2nd inauguration doc than you’d think from the title). I’m not really sure if it’s going to open to $3M or $9M but it really has ended up being a poorly timed film (as the article gestures at).

Did the article mention Iron Lung at all? That’s the one I’m most curious about box office wise

  8. “Out, am I?!?!”

$5M is a great opening weekend projection for an documentary in the post pandemic market but the $75M overall budget from production and marketing that Amazon spent does not help and already putting them deeply in the red to start the year off.
