A (final) follow up to my previous map on Zootopia versus its sequel. First map shows Zootopia 2’s gross versus Moana 2 after the opening weekend, second map compares them after 9 weeks. The data used to make these maps is best-effort (almost all data was available on box office aggregators, but for the few missing values I just retrieved them manually from the respective country and applied current/2025 USD conversion rates).
As the first map shows, Moana 2 had a stronger opening weekend in almost all markets, save a few in Central/Eastern Europe and East Asia. The popularity of the Moana franchise globally cannot be understated. In particular, Moana 2 showed remarkable strength in island (except Japan) and English-speaking countries, as well as Western Europe. Although Zootopia 2 more than made up for that with the insane opening in China.
What was equally impressive though, was the ridiculous legs shown by Z2. You can see on the second map that almost the whole of Europe changes from yellow/orange on the OW to light green after 9 weeks. Meaning that despite opening much lower, Zootopia 2 was able to overtake Moana 2 in less popular markets. In fact believe it or not, *every market*, strong or otherwise, became more “green” from OW to 9 weeks (except China, because it was already the strongest shade of green possible lol). This strongly indicates that reception was universally better than Moana 2 worldwide. There are some amusing differences between geographic neighbours as well e.g. the Nordic countries, South-East Asia.
Does this mean the Zootopia IP will experience a popularity burst globally after this? Possible, but it remains to be seen how much of this goodwill Disney can convert into long-term branding more than the first movie. If they can turn this outreach into Moana levels of support a third movie could open at the level of the latter in North America, Europe and LATAM, and with the same reception/legs as Zootopia 2 that would very likely lead to 2B+, maybe even 2.5B+.

Missed chance to do a funny and have China in a separate +3900% color.

The Zootopia brand has never been huge in North America and most of the countries especially with Zootopia 2 opening weekend wasn’t going to be as big as Moana 2 did especially with its total numbers good while not as huge as Moana 2
But surprisingly China and other Asian countries loved the Zootopia brand that did huge in those countries while France is one of the few countries that Zootopia 2 did better then Moana 2 did
