*El Cautivo* grossing less than half its budget.
Well, considering a big part of its budget was state-funded, either by direct subsidies, such as [the 1.2 million euros given by the ICAA](https://www.cultura.gob.es/dam/jcr:bb6cb369-33a2-45a0-affb-ad8969e01b72/resolucion-concesion-ayudas-largometrajes-generales-2023-primer-procedimiento.pdf) (and that’s without taking into account that the state-funded broadcaster, RTVE, is also contributing to the film).
After *The Others*, *The Sea Inside*, and *Agora* (this one flopped hard), Amenabar’s films have entered into a state of regression, both in box office numbers, and in quality.
