I haven't seen this stated anywhere else (I may have missed it tbh), but as controversial as EmpireCity can be on this sub he does tend to have inside info sometimes. Do we think this is true?

  1. > 3 week exclusive

It makes sense in that Dune was a massive IMAX performer and WB’s been long locked into this date; however, IMAX has constantly listed Avengers: Doomsday as *also* on their list of confirmed IMAX releases (see imax.com’s investor portal or their fillings hosted on the SEC’s web portal). These feel somewhat contradictory even if not literally so.

edit: on the other hand, while it’s listed on their October Investor presentation, it’s ***not*** listed in their December “IMAX day” investor presentation. Note that’s only a “select” number of IMAX films; however, given the inclusion of Avengers: Secret War, Doomsday is notably absent. That’s not hard proof in the other direction but it’s interesting and at least a soft strike against Avengers (given how big everyone expects Avengers to be).

  2. I seriously doubt it. For one, **Doomsday** teasers are being show in IMAX aspect ratio and another thing is that IMAX exclusivity is such a flimsy reason to not move away from its current release date.

  3. since Avengers also has IMAX, it’s inevitable that Dune will be postponed (or brought forward) at this point, in my opinion, Since a date change for Doomsday is nearly impossible, just watch a livestream that’s been going on for four days…

  4. Avengers is also on the IMAX schedule, lol. Anyway, a lot is going to change after the first Doomsday trailer because WB is seriously underestimating this movie and trying to force a Barbenheimer 2.0 that’s not going to happen.

This would affect which which Avengers Doomsday gets some IMAX screens and several PLFs while Dune Part Three gets most of the IMAX screens including 70MM and several PLFs

I genuinely don’t know wtf is gonna happen here. I’m pretty sure Dune’s IMAX is not exclusive and they are definitely sharing screens with Doomsday. I feel like on top of that, Doomsday is staying because they’re rly hyping up the release date with these early trailers.

If anything I’m worried staying like this kills both movies. Barbenheimer only worked because both movies were different and appealing to different but semi-overlapping audiences, and the hype was organically developed and became a theatrical event. There’s a balance to making this work; Wick-iator is too distinct for any real theatrical hype, but Dunesday is so similar that there’s a race of which audiences go when. I’d be surprised if they manage to continue it this long, and if it does I’m conflicted on how these movies end up performing theatrically.

  7. I really want to see Doomsday in IMAX but it would also be an absolutely legendary day to see Dune in IMAX and then Doomsday right after in Dolby. As long as one movie doesn’t move to 2027 I’ll be happy with whatever the outcome is

  8. So its gonna be like MI and stitch all over again where one film gets the nice screens and the other just gets more screens

Many were afraid of Dune: Part Three, but in reality, it’s Disney who should be afraid, ahahah. I’m so glad WB blocked IMAX screens and didn’t give up. Dune: Part Three will be a great cinematic event, just like The Return of the King. No fanservice knockoff should affect that.

Moreover, with complete IMAX dominance and Christmas, DUNESDAY could benefit from a bigger box office haul, just like Oppenheimer did during Barbieheimer.

It makes sense. Doomsday won’t benefit from imax. Dune will surely miles better visually than avengers anyway

I just know the P&C email threads must be in the thousands of replies since Doomsday moved there, reviewing the contracts to make sure they don’t lose those screens.

    Do not blink, WB. 😤

  12. IMAX exclusivity during the holidays is too lucrative of a deal for WB to not stand put. Question of who blinks first.

IMAX is bad for this business. Studios have sold their soul to the devil for those lucrative ticket up-sales but it’s going to start biting them in the ass soon as IMAX continues to gain leverage and position themselves accordingly. When you go to the theater it’s always supposed to be the best picture and sound no matter what, much better than home. But now consumers have been conditioned to think non-IMAX/Dolby theaters are an inferior experience. “Laser at AMC” sounds like Temu IMAX.

Nobody can prove this perception has reduced non-IMAX/Dolby ticket sales in excess of what IMAX/Dolby ticket sales have gained. But I strongly believe it has. Look at what Monster Cable did to the hi-fi business. These snake-oil leeches are a detriment.

People are underestimating who is more at risk here .

That’s the thing people don’t realize , Doomsday needs to hit 1.5 B to not be a disappointment, while Dune will be a success with half that . So Doomsday is actually more at risk .

  15. This discourse is so f’in annoying. Very excited for WB to announce Dune 3’s new release date so we can stop talking about this. Hopefully they stop dragging the announcement out

  16. My guess is that Dune has exclusivity at 70MM locations, and they split shows at smaller IMAXes. Both films were still listed in IMAX’s most recent financials.

  17. Probably won’t do well in the BO.

    Dune has no cultural impact.
    It’s just Avatar in sand.
    And a Sandworm Makto.

Doomsday and Dune both have IMAX (I mean both are on the official IMAX calendar) – it’ll probably come down to individual cinemas/theaters as to what is getting the most ticket purchases on any given day as to how they shift their screenings of each film in the IMAX screens around, as they won’t want to have half-empty IMAX screens for either film, surely… and IMAX aren’t going to want half-empty screens worldwide if Dune isn’t selling well, that’ll just look bad on IMAX.

  19. What I can see happening is the 70mm theaters will be locked for Dune for three weeks and those theaters that are are Xenon or Laser will be sharing screens with Doomsday.

  20. DoctorDickedDown on

Pride & stubbornness will lead to DUNESDAY, which honestly is great as a moviegoer. Doomsday on Thursday, Dune on Friday.

Disney thought incorporating a literal countdown would bully WB into moving, but little chance they give up a 3 week IMAX window.

  21. FineConstruction4111 on

i don’t know why people are assuming Dune i the film that’s gonna move, I don’t think there’s anything to worry about, it’s still gonna be profitable and they had first dibs they shouldn’t feel the need to move. On the other hand, Doomsday needs all the money it can get so I’ll bet Marvel is looking for a new release date to get into those IMAX screens.

  22. Oh wow. Ok this makes sense now why they dont want to move it. 🫠 I saw dune 2 in imax and it was phenomenal… and will be doing the same again.

  23. TheJavierEscuella on

Yeah this is definitely moving. Disney would be pretty pissed if Doomsday doesn’t get IMAX.
