Better than what Deadline had so it goes from fine to good. Still not amazing though but not amazing is about what’s expected now that it’s run has settled. Minecraft is really about to beat an Avatar movie isn’t that wild.
Upside: likely beating 28 years later unless that one increases a lot from the projections yesterday.

Better than Deadline‘s estimate of 3M…, but still underwhelming. Should aim for a 14M+ 3-day and 16.5M+ for the 4-day, hopefully.

Which doesn’t look good for 28 years because wtf… let’s see what happens. That film needs insane legs to turn profit.

I’m filing this under “not a good day”. My model predicted $407.1M final domestic total after Thursday. With these Friday numbers, the model is down to $406.8M.
Including Deadline’s 4-day prediction, it’ll be at $407.9M by Monday. Which makes me think at this stage, Deadline may have overestimated. Will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Not going to mince words here, it’s looking grim for Avatar.
-37% hold from Last Fri is almost on the level of Hobbit (-48%) despite the latter losing 1000+ theatres and Avatar losing comparatively little. Worst hold out of all the holdovers from holidays that are still making significant money. Worse than Marty which lost 500 theatres this weekend. MLK weekend is supposed to be a boost for PG13 and lower movies but A3 is performing below R-rated ones in terms of holds.
If it continues this way it could continue to shed theatres which will further limit its overall gross. It needs some miracle to happen to stop the bleeding.

A2 still had 144 million left in the tank at this point so if A3 can maintain a 54% drop from A2 daily numbers (IE, what it did Friday), it would have 66 million in it’s own tank. I don’t personally believe holding to 54% drops is reasonable, but even if it were that’s still falling just short of Minecraft and Lilo.
