Douglas wasn't acting in the film, he was one of its producers. The project had been a passion of his father, Kirk Douglas, who had starred in the stage adaptation years earlier and owned the rights. When the film finally moved forward, Michael took over the effort and helped bring it to the screen, earning an Oscar for Best Picture in the process.

Not a bad result for a young producer.

On WTF podcast, Christopher Lloyd gives a rare interview where he goes into detail about how important Michael Douglas was to him, not least for giving him the role of Taber.

This is really interesting, thanks for sharing.

The book and film are both so excellent.

I know this is a sweeping generalization but I could never quite get a read on Douglas. I can’t tell if he’s a hippie type who always plays conservative types or if he really is a conservative. I like to think he’s like Sean Penn. I used to think Sean Penn was a republican just cause he gave me that vibe and then found out he’s like off grid, smoke week, grow your own food type, which surprised me.
