Maybe a harebrained theory, but I feel like we’re just now belatedly starting to see the influence of It Follows as that film gradually settles into its place in the canon of great horror films. I know It Follows didn’t invent doppelgängers or shapeshifters, but all the same…
Still think of It Follows as a relatively “new” horror film, but nowadays it’s also starting to feel more like an old master from which newcomers are increasingly taking instruction and inspiration (à la 1978’s Halloween, albeit not yet at that level).
