Hello reddit! Tom Hanks and Tim Allen here. AMA!
Toy Story 5 is out in UK cinemas on June 19th
The toys are back in Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5,” and this time it’s Toy meets Tech.
Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie and the rest of the gang's jobs are challenged when they come face-to-face with Lilypad, a brand-new tablet device that arrives with her own disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie. Will playtime ever be the same?

What has been the biggest challenge voicing these characters for 5 films?
Thank you guys for being the iconic voices of our childhood!
You’ve been voicing Woody and Buzz for over 30 years. How has your approach to voicing these characters changed from 1995 to 2026, and has your real-life friendship influenced their on-screen relationship?
And a specific question for Tom: How does recording dialogue for an animated film, where the animators will build the performance around your voice, compare to acting on set where you’re reacting to other actors and the environment in real time?
Hi! First of all, I just want to say thank you both for being part of my childhood. You Story 3 is on my mind a lot recently, since I’ll be going to college in the fall. Do you have any advice for college, or just life in general? Thank you so much!!
For Tom: how do you feel you’ve grown and matured alongside Woody for the past 30+ years? His character has evolved in so many meaningful ways throughout 4 films that it only makes sense that some of his traits would carry over to your life.
For Tim: was it a lot of fun voicing a bunch of Buzz Lightyear clones in TS5?
Coming from someone who watched Toy Story 2 on loop as a kid, I’d like to thank you two for being a formative part of my life, and knowing that the next generation will experience what this franchise has to offer gives me joy.
Hey guys. Throughout all the films, have either of you ever pitched an idea, story wise, or a funny gag, that ended up in the final movie?
Do you have a favorite scene or line(s) shared with eachother across the franchise?
Have you ever used the Woody/Buzz voices outside of the films? If so, what were the strangest and funniest things you’ve said in their voices?
(If not, how do you imagine things would sound if you had to record a weird PSA of your choice – i.e. “Kids, don’t go for a ride in washing machine spin-cycles!” with the characters?)
Do sex toys also come to life?
Tom, would you rather fight 100 duck-sized Tim Allens or 1 Tim Allen-sized duck?
Tim, would you rather fight 100 duck-sized Tom Hanks or 1 Tom Hanks-sized duck?
Hi Tom and Tim,
I grew up with your movies (and TV!) so thanks for so many memories!!
What are each of your favorite Toy Story movies and why? Also, what about non-Toy Story Pixar film?
Thanks again!!
What was your favourite toy growing up?
Which toys from your own childhoods would you most want to come to life?
Do you ever dream that you’re Woody/Buzz?
A question for you both:
Is there a toy from your childhood that you wish was in the Toy Story franchise?
For Tim Allen: You have a famous car collection.
If Buzz and Woody were real cars, what car would they be?
What genuine advice would you give to younger people trying to navigate the uncertainties of life?
Thank you for keeping these movies alive. What are your favorite memories during the 5 movies?
If Chuck from Castaway went to Mike from Outdoor Man’s shop, what would he buy?
To Tom: How many typewriters do you have in your collection now? Have you ever attempted to use different colored ink-ribbons?
Hey guys, just wanted to say that the Toy Story movies were such a formative part of my childhood and I appreciate you making those movies such a special of my life ☺️
Would you guys be open to working together on a live action film? Always wonder if your voice acting chemistry works on camera as well.
Tim i liked home improvement. Tom Splash is one of my favorite movies.
Do you feel like your characters can be recast after you decide you don’t want to voice them anymore? Or if you say you’re done, this is it for Woody and Buzz characters as well?
For both Tom and Tim, what were some of your favorite toys growing up during your childhood, and did they inspire any specific Toy Story characters throughout the series?
When you do your voice acting, how often are you in a room with other people bouncing off each other’s energies? Or is it mostly solo performances?
Do you think this will be the last Toy Story adventure?
Pixar never really says where Andy and Bonnie live: would you say it’s closer to Detroit or to Sacramento?
How has the voice acting process changed from the first movie to now?
What’s your favorite quotes from Woody and Buzz?
Do you guys still have any special toys from your childhood?
Surely each of you had a favorite toy growing up. If both of your favorite toys from your childhoods were to meet, what do you think their relationship would be like?
What do the characters of Woody and Buzz mean to you individually and why do you still love playing them?
When you first got the script to Toy Story 1, how did you decide you wanted to do it? Did you discuss it with friends and family?
Hi Tom & Tim!
My question for you is – who are your favourite Toy Story characters not named Sheriff Woody or Buzz Lightyear, and why?
Have any stories about working with the late, great Don Rickles?
What was your favorite moment to voice act in any Toy Story movie?
Tom, who’s one director you haven’t worked with that you’d love to in the future?
Tim, what are the key differences between TV Work and films?
What made you both want to continue making Toy Story’s after the conclusion of 3?
Was buzz’s original name supposed to be “rocket” like the lyrics from Strange Things Are Happening To Me imply?
Do you ever think about how different your lives would be if your names were Tim Hanks and Tom Allen instead?
