Technically, this is the real ending, i.e. the one that director Sam Raimi originally filmed wanted to go with. However, the studio pushed back on its anti-climactic bleakness. The new ‘supermarket showdown’ ending was filmed, and was released in theaters this way.
The ‘apocalypse’ ending was restored for the home video release. I know this because I had a friend who had a VHS of Army of Darkness. After watching it one day, he accidentally left it running, and after the credits he was treated to a title card stating “And now … The alternate ending!” followed by the fight in the supermarket.
This was the ending I saw the first time I watched it and I can’t remember where I watched it, I thought it was pretty bleak back then as a kid
The ‘perfect’ ending would combine the two. He slept too long, and the Deadites are everywhere.
A post apocalyptic sequel would have been badass.
