Outrage has erupted in Ireland over the death of a Congolese-born man who was restrained outside a Dublin department store.

Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin has called for a thorough investigation into the incident, which has shocked the country’s small Congolese community.

The man was detained by security guards on the capital’s busy Henry Street last Friday in connection with an alleged shoplifting incident, Irish police said.

He became unresponsive at the scene and was later pronounced dead, police said.

A video of the incident, which has been shared since on social media, showed the man, Yves Sakila, being held on the ground by a number of people for almost five minutes.

At one point, one of them appeared to kneel on his head or neck.

This is straight up George Floyd treatment. No perfume is worth more than a person’s life.

I’m so ashamed. We need to feel shame when this happens in our country (I’m Irish).

A former leader of our country Bertie Aherne was recorded making racist comments about the Congolese community in Ireland only a week ago. He is a criminal and has not apologised.

Shoplifting does not deserve a death sentence .

I have watched the video and there was one man who did not let up on his neck.

    3. The racists gleefully celebrating his death. It’s horrifying. I feel terrible for his family. Whether he’s a career criminal or not, this is not how he should have died and nothing could justify that.
