Jackson’s Lord of the Rings are one of the Crown Jewels of movie making but it breaks my heart to see him become another George Lucas and end up spending the rest of his career just flailing around making little and constantly going back to the same IP. Maybe this will be amazing too (if it happens) but I’d rather have seen two decades of prolific creativity from him away from Tolkien rather than this. Just like Lucas and Star Wars.

The Silmarillion is either going to become the greatest fantasy trilogy ever made or a 9-hour genealogy lesson.

Holy Shit. I didn’t think this would ever happen.

Whatever they do, I hope they take this seriously. The Silmarillion is basically Tolkien’s version of The Bible. It’s a generations-spanning compilation of myths about the nature of existence and human (and elf) nature, it’s weird and existential and beautiful and absolutely not something that should be within 10,000 leagues of The Hobbit Trilogy in tone. It’s less like Lord of The Rings and more like Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” with fantasy trappings.

    5. The Silmarillion would be so difficult to adapt.

It’s not a novel and first part of it is God singing the universe into being

    6. I would absolutely love this, especially if he makes it to stand on its own, more biblical and epic as opposed to a straightforward story. Tolkiens world is my favorite fantasy world and I know people didn’t love the Hobbit but I’d trust PJ to make something worthwhile, especially if he is at the helm from the start (unlike the Hobbit movies).

    7. Wasn’t the Nazgul scream in the trilogy the sound Fran Walsh made when Peter Jackson first pitched filming the Silmarilion?

    8. It would be much wiser to try to adapt Fall of Gondolin or Nirnaeth or some such. Hell, even the Exile of Noldor.

Trying to do it all at once smacks of epic fail. Because that’s not what Silmarillion is either. It’s more like annals or a collection of stories. And should be treated as such.

This reminds of that story on the set if LOTR. There’s a famous scene during which Strider / Aragon played by Viggo Mortenson howls in pain, this because he kicked a dead horse and because it had been so badly beaten his foot went straight into bone.

      That’s insane. Insane.

Tolkien estate wouldn’t let Amazon get the proper rights. So they had to fill In the blanks from the appendices only to in turn look to license it anyways

      Finally! Medical-grade films for insomnia.

Kidding, I’ll watch the shit out of the fantasy family tree movies if he’s makin’em.

    12. Push for practical sets and actual artistry like LOTR and I’ll be there, otherwise, no thanks.

    13. The only part of the simarillion that I think should be adapted is the story of Beren and Luthien. Just have a narrator explain the context and adapt it beat by beat

    14. Just don’t.

The Silmarillion is so dense in content, they end up cuttin 90% of it. Even the individual sub-stories could span several movies each with how much there is *theoretically* happening, but at the same time, most of it never goes into details so it will all just be filled with made-up stuff noone asked for.

Like the romance plot in the Hobbit.

After how bad the Hobbit films turned out to be? Ehh, I’m not sure if want this really.

Look if I actually believe this, I would be so freaking excited about this, but I genuinely don’t believe that this is true. Whoever is posting about this is straight up lying, or they completely misinterpreted something that was said.

      I dunno, man. lol.

      Gotta ask.

Are we gonna get Lotr’s Peter, or The Hobbit Peter?

Come at me like Boromir! ;p

    18. Good lord please no, Jackson hasn’t produced anything of quality in over 20 years and has already proven himself incapable of capturing the magic of LotR for a second time. The Silmarillion may also be the worst book in the history of the world to try and put to screen
