Meta and CEO Mark Zuckerberg are being sued by five publishers and author Scott Turow, who allege the tech company illegally copied millions of books, articles and other works to train Meta’s AI systems.

“In their effort to win the AI ‘arms race’ and build a functional generative AI model, Defendants Meta and Zuckerberg followed their well-known motto: ‘move fast and break things,'” the plaintiffs say in their lawsuit. ”They first illegally torrented millions of copyrighted books and journal articles from notorious pirate sites and downloaded unauthorized web scrapes of virtually the entire internet. They then copied those stolen fruits many times over to train Meta’s multibillion-dollar generative AI system called Llama. In doing so, Defendants engaged in one of the most massive infringements of copyrighted materials in history.”

When is this ghoul (along with the others) finally going to see the consequences of their actions on society? Oh, never? Fantastic.

it’s like this across every industry with every tech CEO. they know laws and enforcement are too slow to catch up (never mind the lobbying and straight up capture of institutions) so they just run roughshod over everything and let society pick up the pieces. no help is coming, which is the hardest thing for me to wrap my head around lately.

The lawsuits dont mean nothing. We’ve got to start somewhere and keep going.

This is blatantly obvious. There isn’t a single LLM that wasn’t trained on stolen work. We just need the legal system to actually have the guts to stand up for not only what’s right but what is *literally in the law they are supposed to enforce.*

The legal costs of doing blatantly illegal things is baked into the cost of doing business for billionaires.

An example is in Mike Isaac’s book about Uber, they budgeted for bylaw infractions and court costs at the beginning when Uber was operating illegally in many cities. They even had a budget for paying off the tickets Uber drivers received while operating illegally.
