but… invincible looks like shit. most of the budget is for famous voice actors. it’s popular because the story is interesting and there’s big plot twists, but in terms of an adaptation it’s just cheap and ugly.

There’s a couple great videos on YouTube called “Comics That Deserve the Invincible treatment” that go over some contemporary comic books that have major potential for animated series! It’s how I learned about Radiant Black, a comic that I’m convinced could be the next Invincible level beloved series.

Kirkman’s handling of Invincible does not make me think he is the guy for this. I would prefer my animated shows to have some animation in them.

Building a pipeline like that is a great idea on paper, especially given Image’s massive amount of stories that don’t belong to the big superhero families but probably could be very profitable if animated, spurring comic book sales and other merchandise.  Radiant Black and the rest of Kyle Higgins’s Massiveverse immediately comes to mind given Higgins has said he wants an adaptation.

But the American animation industry is such a complete wreck right now, lacking institutional knowledge to the point one show Kirkman’s studio is handling in Invincible is so poor visually people are begging him to outsource his next project to
Japan.  And rebuilding that knowledge, those pipelines takes time and money that Kirkman would clearly rather use to hire celebrity voice actors.
