Finding one your posts is like watching an Alejandro Jodorowsky movie: whoever pops up on screen will undoubtedly be naked doin weird shit within a few minutes.

This is wild to see on reddit. I did my senior project in art history on Goltzius (and the transition from engraving into etching during this period) have a tattoo of one of his engravings. Fascinating artist nobody talks about. I had NO idea this movie existed. That being said I’m not sure what to think based on this scene, how did you come across?

Greenaway comes up in the misogyny debate from time to time, less frequently than Von Trier but he’s the more interesting case. I think he comes down against women in a lot of casual and flippant ways that are more damning than his big artistic philosophical scenes. Putting intelligent words in the mouths of intelligent women in the form of a postured debate is betrayed earlier and later by what amount to jokes at the expense of women. He can’t help being an absolute boob too often to really take seriously, because even if you get two thirds of a way through a movie and find it rock solid he’ll inevitably pull some bullshit that makes you feel like an idiot for trying to pin him down on anything. It’s like vapour. You can get the same tee-hee shitposting from Jodorowsky where you, the young pretentious art hoe, realise that the big art daddy tells a lot of dick and shit jokes but at least in his case he’s working from an inflexible and honest position. Greenaway is altogether too British about it. But then I could be accused of not understanding that not liking it is the point, and around we go again. I think he’s made one good film, and that was a documentary about a painting.
