Netflix spent ‘a fortune’ editing out earphones from Beef season 2 after Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan decided to listen to music while performing their various scenes together.

Well, after reading the article it sounds just as mad as the headline. I think that director just got walked all over. Maybe during some kind of rehearsal but when filming for real?

That’s hilarious, Fellini used to do this but since he wasn’t an idiot he would pipe the music over speakers so that the actors appeared to move with a certain kind of rhythm. It worked wonderfully, and would probably work again today considering how much dialogue is ADR’d it wouldn’t be much different from those 1960s days!

Why do actors do this? Like that shit with Wesley Snipes not wanting his eyes open lol.

Pretty unprofessional from the actors.

bit of an odd choice not to just….pipe in music. On a speaker. Like a million other productions have done for those kind of moments.

I feel like this is on the director/producers for allowing this.

I work in film. Very common practice: put a bluetooth speaker blasting music on-set and redo voices in studio during postproduction.

It sounds like it was in a couple of scenes, and the cost to paint out earphones would probably be a rounding error in either of their paychecks for a single episode. You’re paying good money for great actors, you don’t question it if they’re finding something useful to their performance and it isn’t an actual problem.
Actual problems that came up during the shoot? — the director is not going to talk about those while on a PR tour. This is just something that was probably thought to seem interesting-enough to get clicks and drive some people who wouldn’t otherwise have heard of the show to be curious.

Why would the actors even do that? That seems so distracting

So they added their own music so they could “feel the scene” better as they were acting. It sounds like the director wasn’t involved enough if the actors themselves are setting the rhythm of each scene.

Okay, great! Netflix spends some of their gazillions of dollars giving more work to VFX artists? All for it.

Wouldn’t it have been way cheaper to solve this problem with a combination of custom cosmetic work and earplugs?

They probably mentioned this to be quirky, but I find this infuriating. Both on the actors for wasting the post production teams time because they can’t just do their jobs normally, and the director for, for some reason humouring this request at all.

So it helped folks get work hours that Netflix has to foot the bill for? I got no beef with that.

For those too lazy to actually read the article, here’s your tl;dr:
Isaac had headphones on for a scene (scripted), made comment “this interesting.”
Director intrigued, let Isaac try (unscripted) in more scenes.
Carey wanted onboard.
Cast got carried away.
Director’s fault for costing unplanned expense by getting actors hooked on using sync’d earbuds to have mood music for their scenes.

Guys the article states they were earwigs not AirPods lol. They hide fairly well in your ear canal. I bet it was some close ups where if anything you’d see a tiny skin toned antenna sticking out of their ear.
