Recently I bought a very interesting book in a charity shop about Afrikaners and the fall of apartheid (was written in 1989 so it was still in place but everyone knew it was on it’s last legs).

Rather depressing fact I learned is that in this period, family annihilator incidents spiked dramatically among Afrikaners. Due to the toxic, macho and violent culture of Afrikaners of the time, and the fear of what lay in the future, many men would feel entitled to not only kill themselves but their families too. Meanwhile among black families, the number was relatively low – they knew real hardship and were excited for the future. Couldn’t help but think of Charlize and her mother’s story when I read that.

Damn that was scary to read. Glad her mom had the means to protect them and that the alcoholic POS father got what was coming to him.

I wonder what book her own children are going to write in thirty years.
