The whole movie is so confusing for me. I left the theater confused, and 6 years later it still doesn’t register with me. Probably my least favorite out of all the Nolan films I have seen. I’m usually a big fan of his work.

I always thought the “fighting in reverse” was really cool. Conceptually kinda weird, but executed well.

I loved the visuals but it’s all such nonsense. It makes action which advances plot extremely difficult to follow because you can’t tell what’s actually happening. The movie still does quite a lot of that

  4. How to ruin your movie in 3 steps:

    1. Put a charisma black hole of a *protagonist* as your lead.
    2. Make a muddled mess out of your plot.
    3. Do a piss-poor sound mix.

Tenet is one of those movies that I still can’t figure out if the movie is far too smart for its own good or if I’m too stupid to understand the movie. Either way it’s probably the biggest misfire of Nolan’s career to me.

  6. This move is a great idea than no one knew how to execute. And it’s still a watchable movie because the idea is that cool.

I risked going to the theater at the height of COVID. I would’ve been so pissed if I died because of this movie.

I think Tenet is Nolan’s worst film, it’s like the Star Wars prequels, the directors distilled creativity without any outside input to balance or structure it.

It’s also my favorite Nolan film. It’s just so cool conceptually.

Love Nolan’s movies, but this one is just a mess. It’s so badly executed, and so many things are wrong. Plus, the audio mix is so bad, subtitles are required most of the time.

Even if there hadn’t been COVID, I still think the box office for this wouldn’t have been much different.

  10. Damn, I really don’t like how this looks. Super confusing and hard to follow. It also just looks silly.

  11. I think the movie is entirely overrated, but holy shit there are moments of pure genius. The way reversed video is blended with normal video is such an original, incredible effect.

I’ve watched this movie at least half a dozen times and it still confuses me.

  13. This film is an absolute banger and you would only believe it sucks if you exclusively get your opinions from Reddit.

  14. For me, the worse thing of this movie is the main actor. He is so plain the whole movie!

  15. I like the ambition, and the idea behind it.

But ultimately we are left trying to follow a fight while also piecing together its abstract logic at the same time (one that it never fully explains to the audience, or it’s protagonist. We’re literally told “don’t think, just feel”). One fighter is following natural rules of cause and effect, the other one is following rules of effect, followed by cause.

On paper it sounds interesting. But on film it’s something that is visually impressive, but mentally exhausting, and even frustrating.
