Long story short, Hulu thought the show was trash and didn’t want to move forward with it.
I don’t think there’s anyone to “blame” here, it was a business decision. It seems like the pilot is already done so hopefully they can pitch it to other streaming services with more success.

It was cancelled because the Buffy reboot was without Buffy.
She had a cameo at the end. And without all the original actors. And the producers realized no one would watch it.
